Ball Bearing myth?

Short and sweet.

I've been looking into turbo's, people keep telling me ball bearing turbo's don't last as long as conventional thrust bearing turbos, no one can tell me why...


Anyone up to an explanation?

because the bearings inside the turbo get pissed off really easy. the slightest spec of dirty oil will trash the bearings and trash the turbo. but micron filters help prolong the life. feed your ball bearing turbo nice clean the absolute best filtered oil and it will last longer than a regular thrust bearing turbo cause of its efficiency and ease of the spool up puts less wear and tear on the turbo.

I think its the other way around. Not positive tho. They are alot more expensive thats for sure

A wild shot could be that:

1) the cartridge requires a special in line filter to a) decrease the pressure and b) filter out contaminants.

2) some designs are Mitsu/Garret combos and maybe they haven't been around long enough to "prove" themselves. While at the same time rubbed off their reputation to the full Garret setups.

There's nothing mechanically wrong with them with the proper maintenance and care. But then again that's just it, can't push that extra 1K miles b4 an oil change

Actually the Garrett Ballistic Concepts ball-bearing center cartridges (FP30, AGP LR)are more durable than conventional thrust bearing turbos. Also the bearing design will help to reduce lag .The only thing that can really destroy one is oil contamination. Put a 10 micron oil filter on the feed line and it will last a lot longer a conventional turbo.
