Anybody see the new sport compact car for march??? well, dan cokic's 93 GSX got 4th overall in the ultimate street car challenge..it lost to three fuc ki n monsters by quite a bit, but still...won best 0-60 and 1/4 mile times...comments?

I actually saw the DVD footage. The GSX ran the 1/4 and did rather well in other catagories. I do think it could have performed much better than it did in some of the catagories though.

One would be the road course. It might have been the driver or the set-up but I still think something else was lacking there, not the car.

If I remember correctly, I think the Viper did take it overall. But he didn't start off with a base of 195 hp.

ya the viper got first, second and third went to an r33 skyline and a supra...pretty big hill to overcome for a little 4 banger...im just glad to see it beat the wrx because a lot of wrx owners at my school have been talkin all this poop about how their cars are gonna rip a whole in me

Yeah the 1g did pretty well, but that 3000gt was a joke. 625 hp my ass, it could only turn out 300 whp on the dyno.

ya i was over on the 3si website and they were complaining about how poor there representation was and that hopefully their cars will be included in next year's competition

I was looking for that 3si thread about the idiot with the VR4 spyder, but couldn't find it. Help?

EDIT: Found it. http://www.3si.org/portal/forums/sh...hlight=Ultimate Street Challenge&pagenumber=1

Also, FYI the owner/driver of that Viper is one heck of a road racer. He tore up OTC this past year, not to mention some of the hill climbs in Cali. I'm not sure the competition knew what they were up against. It was bad enough it was a Viper.

I'm happy about the DSM representation though. Not bad, I think we will have someone place podium next time around.

Whoa, they really tear the 3000gt owner to shreds in that thread...I think he lied his way into the competition and it shows...sucks for 3000gt/stealth owners cuz his car was a huge bust and made them look like crap

I just read that whole thread. God damn im glad im not that guy. They just keep shitting on him. But he does seem like he is full of ####. But i dunno. Just glad not to be him.

But what i nice showing for the 1gen. How ever he is nice job.:dsm:

I still think overall the contest is flawed. Here's why:

1) The magazine is SCC, right? Sport Compacts? Is a viper a Sport compact? No. Is that hybrid Rotary roadster a sports compact? Hell no.

2) Ultimate Street Car challenege? How many of these cars are even daily driven? They claim to be, but I don't believe it. I'm guessing at least half of the field were trailer queens.

3) Most of these cars were backed by serious sponsorship money. IS this The Ultimate Street Car Challenge? Or the Ultimate Tuner Car challenge? The Skyline team had a BACKUP CAR for crying out loud.

4) Not all of the owners drove their cars. MAybe this is nitpicking, but, shouldn't the owner do all the driving? The Viper doesn't fall into this category, because he's the guy that owns that. The lambs just invited the wolf to slaughter. But some of the other teams.......

This is true, but the "readers" do vote the cars in. I know this is probably a just a front, but u know as well as I do, if this thing was just Hondas, DSMs, and Subys there would be no competition. I'm glad to see a Viper take it just to help erase the stigmatism we place on them sometimes. Yestheyare expensive and on street level the majority of the time we can romp them. But if it's fully tuned and tricked right, they are extreamly competitive.

That argument about the "readers" voting in who runs is the basis for SCC letting in whatever gets brung. Since I can't blame them for that, I DO blame them on the driver note. I also believe that if you bring your car, you should drive your car. I can build the heck out of a car, but I can't drive (still trying to get an RT below .85). The only basis I can imagine for having "drivers" is to level the playing field. But then you need to have ONE driver who gets to practice each event in each car so that he can drive it at the best of his ability for each vehicle. Which is not the way it is done. As for having a back up car, that is BS in my book. The readers voted in whatever your car was, if it breaks, too bad. I seem to remember in the first one a supra DID break, and was told to suck it up. Overall, I think SCC should take a step forward and not put cars that aren't "Sport Compacts" into the voting pool to begin with. But once the contestants are chosen, those same contestants should be the ones doing the competition. Is there a more straight forward way to do a competition like this?

i think the DSM would have advanced or ATLEAST have been closer to the top if he simply had street tires for every even... he had the 1/4th in the bag and he DEFINANTLY wasnt giving it his all for that (that car should be into deep 10s....). i think he could have pulled 900+ points (viper got 977, skyline got 972 and supra got 946 i believe.. talon was 4th with 780 or so...). also the mr2 driver screwed the road course position up and screwed us out of about 20 points... but that would have raised EVERYONE but the vipers points a little bit. a better skid pad would come from street tires, better gross display of power for sure... it should have owned that competition with some driftage. and the show car part was definantly biased. performance over function never sounded so good.

ide like to see a 500 horse Roadrace DSM try it out next time, anyone up to see if we can get roadrace's car in next time? LOL

i would be up for it but my car has nothing haha kinda drunk rught now so i think the green dsm should see if he can tune his poop for it

1. They should have the same driver for all the cars. Racing on a road course is 90% driver not car. There is no doubt the mumford was the best driver.

2. The dsm did awesome in the straight line competitions. Look at how much was dumped into the supra and the skyline 25k each in parts alone I'd guess. The little 4 still won.

3. Just like Road & Track does with their little tuner test the finished price of the parts and work should be posted. I bet the dsm would look real good when all the numbers are exposed.

4. Hopefully next year dsm's will do even better.

5. Vipers are still awesome and have ruled the track since their inception.

There are two types of "Hi-Performance" DSM's out there:

1. Hi-HP, peaky drag machines with unsuitable suspension for road racing
2. Well-setup autocross DSM's with excellent suspension and low "peak" power.

Since DSM's aren't know for their handling ability, are fairly heavy, and have "peaky" engines, it's not likely that you'll find a car that is set up for "balls-out" lapping. The Viper has more area under the curve, and hence, is easier to ride the rim of the traction circle. It also has an uncompromised layout, unlike the FWD-based DSM. There are many cars that could, in theory, kick the DSM's butt if properly set up. On a dry track, there's almost nothing that a DSM could do better than say, a well-modded Z06 or highly boosted Miata. This is the reality of the racetrack, not the Stoplight Grand Prix where the AWD DSM rules the world.

You can make anything fast, just add money. Unfortunately, there is a lot more money being thrown at more capable cars that at DSM's. A DSM is a great all-around fast car for cheap. It is not, and never will be a world-class sportscar.

we can nominate larry or charlie (if the car ever gets out the shop;) )just when his car is gonna be done there is something else to upgrade.

Brendon:dsm:

ALright, we had a big talk about this on streetraicngonline...

The Viper won it fair and square. You can argue all day about how "It has stoopid push rdoe tecnolegy!" But it's a fine automobile and it deserves it's 64k pricetag. Hell, read the damn article. SCC HATED the fact that is won and the magazine itself is very anti-anything above 6 cylinders. That's why the only thing I read is Modified Mag and Turbo.

But I do wish the rules forced the competitors to use 93 octane and DOT tires. And you know what? My money still would have been on the Viper and then probably the Skyline and THEN the DSM.

I mean, fellas, I love our car. It's like the 2nd or 3rd cheapest to make fast. It pulls hard, the engine is quite reliable, and it has a great aftermarket. But I like to be realistic and I hope everyone is well aware there are other cars out there that can put out just as decent as a fight. Still...the 4g63 did prove to be the best 4 cylinder in the competition (though a 3sgte powered Celica can give a run for the money or the 2.2 Chrysler Omni GHL)
