Hey guys Im getting ready to upgrade , tubo and intercooler. My question is this , Is there a FMIC out there short enough ( hight wise) so that i don't have to get rid of or notch out my inpact bumper . I really dont feel comfortable about removing it or taking aways it strangth by cuting it up. Im not sure yet witch turbo im going with , Im kinda leaning towrd the BIG T-28 KILLER .

I apreciate all your help guys THANKS.

I thinkthe old small greddy IC didn't require it,but now all the FMIC's require at least cutting the bumper support.

if you want to go that route.. might as well do the supra SMIC & save alot of $$$.

The supra side mount would be good for that turbo. The front mount is better. Since you are in Detroit, it is not as much of a factor as it is for me since I am in Florida. You can just make your own front mount for alot less and then you could make sure the piping does not require trimming. Go to www.roadraceengineering.com and buy and Griffin core with HKS end tanks. Then you can have a muffler shop make the pipping and you should be set and it would only cost about 500 bucks. If you route the piping to either side of the radiator, then you sould not need to trim the bumper.

yea but even a core you make yourself is gonna be tiny if you dont intend on modifying that front crash bar.. I mean whats the opening from bottom lip to the bottom of the crash bar, maybe 6-8 inches?

Well, when you do your own piping, then at least you have the option of sending the piping to either side of the raditator. The Greddy and Apex designs have a pipe that runs across the top of the intercooler. That requires a good amount of trimming. Even guys that put the little starion intercoolers require some trimming. You are right that some trimming will be required for a front mount. I suppose a side mount would be the best route if no trimming is to be done.

I think you would be more happier with a fmic. I was contemplating on a Alamo or HRC smic at one time and I finally made my decision to go with a fmic instead, and I'm extremely happy that I did. I was also dreading the bumper cutting until I talked to Larry about it. He told me that he used a dremmel and that's exactly what I used. I soon realized it wasn't that big of a deal just a little time consuming that's all. Plus when going with a fmic you get the added performance and that aggressive look. Good luck!!

Yeah , I'd rather have a fmic , but just not fond of cuting that bumper . I gues I'll just have to reinforce it some how. What fmic did you go with (speedy).
The large GReddy fmic. I left all of the bumper reinforcement and foam padding off of the car so it would cut down on the trimming time. I know I'm taking a chance but maybe on down the road sometime I will take the time to trim the 5mph bumper reinforcement and put it back on.

I put a Spearco 2-221 on my Laser. I'm not sure how similar the amount of
space in the 2G fascias would be to this, but my guess is that it'd be pretty
similar. By tilting my intercooler 12 degrees back (custom piping),
I was able to get about 7/8" clearance (min.), with just a small cut into
the bumper on either side. I've also got 5/8" clearance behind the FMIC
along the bottom edge, as another path for cooling air to get directly to the
radiator. I think my 7/8" clearance in front is enough that I can withstand
the occasional small bump from other cars in parking lots and when parallel
parked, as well as allowing airflow to the upper portion of the FMIC and
on into the radiator.

As far as overall height being short enough to be below the bumper, you
can see that, even with only my 6" tall core, a fair portion of it extends above
the bottom edge of the bumper. For airflow, you want the core to not be
jammed up against the bottom radiator frame, so if you're set on keeping
everything below the bumper, you'd probably have to go with a side-to-side flow
layout with a (really) small cross section. However, if your car still has A/C
(again, this may differ with the 2G), the refrigerant piping would cause
any side-to-side flow FMIC to have to be a couple inches forward of where
I've got mine. In my picture, the black object by the electrical connector
is one of those A/C lines. If you can really keep it below the bumper, though,
having to shift it forward wouldn't be much of an issue. And in that case, it'd
become OK to let the core extend further downward.

As for results that are possible without a huge intercooler, I know of a 2G
owner locally, using the "small" RRE Griffin/Spearco unit, who has gotten
below 11.5 sec. with it.

BTW, people keep calling them 5 MPH bumpers, but I know that the 1G's
are only rated 2.5 MPH. My guess would be that the 2G's are 2.5 MPH, also.

Another reason I left my 2mph or 5mph bumper and foam padding off was to help in weight reduction. The thing weighs about 15lbs. If I get hit in the front end it would all be destroyed regardless if it was on or not.
