OK, here's the situation...ive got a 92 laser awd with 125K on the motor. the motor has VERY minor oil leaks, not much "dsm tick", and runs very strong. So..i want to get a MBC and run approx. 15-16 psi but my dad says "You're engine is an old piece of sh*t and cannot handle boost and 15 psi will blow it to pieces." So...obviously i understand that over 16psi i need at least a fuel pump and possibly injectors..but isnt it pretty safe to run 15psi on this motor? i go to the track like once a year and never wind the motor out to redline when i daily drive. Preferrably wiseman answer this please so i can shut my dads mouth. LOL thanks in advance.

ps anyone is welcome to answer though.

What is the compression of the motor?

If the compression is good it will handle 15psi just fine and mods just fine.

tell your dad i have 174k on my motor,I run 12.04 in the 1/4 at 114mph! If the car has been taken care of you should not have a problem at 15psi.I would not run anymore boost then that with stock pump.Change your fuel filter.

Step 0 on any tuning guide should be to make sure the engine is in good running condition before doing anything. If the compression is good, the timing belt is within it's life span, and you have properly gapped plugs and good wires, you should be fine to run 14-15.

hmm thanks guys! anyways...i replaced fuel filter about 4k miles ago, and plugs and wires about 5k ago...next question..im not really a mechanic so i dont know how to do a compression test... but i watched one of my friends do a compression test on his four wheeler...would he be able to use his tester on my car or do you need diff. kinds of testers?

Time to change your plugs and wires again. oh btw I ran 18psi on my stock 190,000 mile motor with major oil leaks, no prob for 2 years.

Heheh funny thing is my dad is the same way, you should of seen the look on his face while we were tearing it apart. All hes ever seen is chevy big blocks.

He about #### a brick when he saw that the factory crosshatching was still there after that many miles.

fo the compression test, remove the wires and plugs, screw the tester into where the spark plugs were(one cylinder at a time), then crank the engine.

note: make sure the engine is warm. i did a test on my cold engine and got 85psi. i redid it when the engine was warm and got 150psi

so can i ask him to use the same compression tester that he used on his quad for my car?

As long as the tester screws into where ou spark plugs go into then yes.

Speaking of plug testers.

How the ^$%#&#$ do you get them *out*? Mine allows the hose to swivel in the fitting (handy so you can see it), but the fitting snugs in and becomes almost impossible to get out once it's seen some compression.

I've been thinking of crimping some copper water pipe over it to give a handle, but I was wondering if there was something simpler I've just missed...

...you mean like buying a different hose?
