As far as I'm told, the stock 4g63 turbo engine has a harmonic dampner. I'm going standalone, and will be reving up to 8k. My question is, should I worry if I use the OEM Balancer, or would it be worth it to get an aftermarket one like the one which Unorthodox puts out? Also, what exactly is at risk with harmonic resonation?

I don't have any experience in this myself, but a lot of people completely remove the balance shafts without adverse effects (the engine does shake a little more, it's just a comfort thing). A "Balance Shaft Removal Kit" is easy to get the parts for as well, and then you don't have to worry about the belt breaking.

the stock one fall apart with age.
When it brake if half it will destroy quite a few thing.

My opinion replace with a underdrive pulley.

the under drive pulley has no dampening affect.

The stock one does not do much either.

i might be wrong about the stock on.

I have heard nightmare about stock pulley coming apart and destroying and engine.

I believe the stock crank pulley is seperate from the Harmonic Dampner. The aftermarket Dampners that I've seen act as a pulley as well, but not the OEM one I don't think..

The stock crank doesnt have much of a dampner, it is weighted but small. Most of the vibration is eliminted throught the balance shaft. This engine doesnt really have windage problems like the hefty V8, or the stiff V6. To put an aftermarket balancer look for clearance problems, will it eliminate the AC unit, does it work along with the balance shaft or with out it? If you plan on putting out a good amount of HP, balancing the crank will really be the first step. If I am not mistaken most people dont put in harmonic balancers in 4 cyl unless your pushing some serious horses... drag really. IMO

Well the specific engine is going to have a 60 trim t3/t4. Forged pistons and Steel billet rods are going to allow me to boost pretty high, so I will have a decent amount of HP to the crank. The guy building my car with me want's to have an aftermarket dampner if I decide to use one soon, so that the crank can be balanced WITH the Harmonic Dampner on it.

BTW: No balance shafts
