Macon,
i was looking through the tuning guide. I am picking up a 99 black/black GSX 43,000 miles soon and am trying to plan my mods. I have right around $4,000 for mods after suspension, so i am looking into turbo upgrades. How do i try deciding on the right turbo .

I dont want anything that will have alot of lag and but i dont need 400+ hp either. so how do i go about picking out a turbo?

I would like to get somthing pushing 20-22 psi.

most likely a t28 will be what you want. I think some people might reccomend (sp?) an agp turbo but I know the T28 is good for street driving with occasional track time. And it should go without saying that you should make sure you have all the supporting mods...blah blah blah

Okay..the big t28 is similar to the factory 2g turbo (t25) exterior wise, internally the compressor wheel is different and it produces around 320hp. Getting 22psi? Why wouldnt you be able to? You can get 22psi out of a t25; doesnt mean its smart, or efficient. Oh, and HP doesnt come from turbo, in a sense, it comes from tuning. Sure you can bolt on a 16g and run 13's but without precise tuning, you wont see 12's too easily.

If I were you, i'd just opt for a 16g, port and (clip-if you want greater top end and suffer a little more lag, very minute) and you should be fine. Should be able to go 12's with all the basic bolt-ons and tuning. If you're worried about lag and still want pretty nice top end, take into consideration the AGP dual ball-bearing turbo's..l1r or the l2r, im sure you're not ready for the l3r (its laggy for what you want/need and produces some nasty ###'s).

FYI, people usually use the 16g/t28/l1r for autocrossing since spool up is reasonably low.

So, it all depends on what you choose to do, autox/drag race/street race...after you decide on your primary goal then you can narrow down spool, top end, etc. HTH..

If I were you I'd get L1R or L2R. Of course you will need all the supporting mods. Before you even think about turbo do some intake and exaust, boost controller, get a s-afc and some gauges (EGT, BOOST) too so you can practice your tuning. After that I'd recommend getting the turbo and a front mount intercooler/intercooler piping. Don't forget to upgrade your injectors and fuel pump or else you're gonna run lean as f*** and blow your engine :)

Do lots and lots of research, and when you think you know it all read some more. Better to do things right the first time otherwise its going to cost you $$$
