I have a K&N Air Intake but I left in the factory housing because I don't know what to do with the MAF sensor and some of the other junk that's connected to the housing. What should I do to expose the Air Filter?
 
Just to monkey w/ your thinking on this;) , opening up the airfilter element to the enginebay allows very hot underhood air temps to flow right into your intake. Before hacking the aircan, you have a legitimate cold air intake.

If hacking the aircan, I would put a "wall" between the engine bay and the filter element and then be sure to remove the grate behind to head light that covers the cold air inlet into the engine bay for the aircan.

My car ran a little leaner at idle and during light throttle when I hacked/removed my air can. My fuel trims adjusted high. I suspect it ran leaner throughout the rpm/hertz range. I believe opening up the filter allows an easier path for the air to travel into the non-metered lowe section of the MAF. This would certainly yield some better throttle response. And is probably the real reason why some feel a seat of the pants improvement. This mod did for me something very similar to removing the lower honey comb. But, of course w/ less drastic results. Just don't forget to log after every mod.
