Hi everyone-im thinking about upgrading to either a 16g (big or small i dont know yet) or the agp ball-bearing L1R for road racing. My goal is full boost by 3000-3250 rpm and ~350hp peak hp when fully tuned (with a decently flat power curve). When upgrading the turbo, i plan on having all the necessary supporting mods beforehand (turbo back exhaust, fuel support/control, intake, etc) I am wondering when each turbo will reach full boost (ie how much lag for each).

based on what i have read, the 16g has decent spool-up (3500? i have heard conflicting reports)) and the big 16g is a little slower but flows 45 (?) more cfm. how much slower is the big 16g and is it worth the extra power up on top?

The L1R seems to be highly praised and also seems to be worth the extra money. from their website, 22psi at 3000rpm is well within my goals, but is it overkill for "only" 350hp?

thanks in advance,
Ryan

Personally, i'd go with the L1R, great hp with quick spool. But you'll save a lot of money if u get the Big 16G. And that'll still get u good hp numbers.

If you are really serious about the spool I would try something with a bit higher compression like 95 pistons or a 9:1 forged piston. Compression and tuning are going to make the biggest difference in your spool. The more control you have over how the timing is added and other fuel components the better your spool will be.

Big 16G/prted/clipped 10 deg.
3" Turbo-back/test pipe
2.5 UIP

15 psi @ 3000 RPM in 5th gear. Can make ~400 crank HP on race gas with the right supporting mods. Cheap. Reliable. Proven. If you've the dough to go with a BB turbo, by all means, do it.

I would stay away from clipping the turbo as it in theory makes the compressor less efficient and increases spool time. However opinion on this change with who you ask. Generally people with clipped turbos say that it doesn't affect spool time but usually turbo's that get clipped are small. Nobody clips a 60-1 or t3/t4 with a 60+ a/r because it doens't need any extra lag and has plenty of flow.

For road racing what you should do is run the smallest possible turbo to make the HP you want. If you want 350 crank HP then a small 16G ported and unclipped would likely be what I would run. On the drag strip you want big and don't worry about lag, that's what stutter boxes are for, however on a road course lag can be a serious problem so get a turbo that spools as absolutely fast as possible.

thank you dsmjim, but does the small 16g spool faster than the L1R?

i am leaning toward the L1R because in the future if i decide i need more power, the L1R can push out 400+ bhp while the 16g cannot.

i am in the same boat as you right now......looking for a turbo that spools very quickly and still puts out decent hp numbers. I am probably gonna go with a l1r. for the simple fact it can put out bigger numbers if I want it too. AGP has a package deal on the first page of their website with:

Includes: AGP/SFP T3 manifold, TiAL 35, dump tube, 57 or 60 trim T3/T4, 2.5" O2 housing, oil feed line, oil drain tube, gaskets, nuts, and bolts.

upgrade to a l1r, 40mm tial wastegate and you have a pretty damn good setup. and the manifold they put on with the fifth runner for the wastegate looks pretty awesome.

i have emailed them and am waiting for a price for the whole package

i will post back on this topic when i hear what it will cost with the 40mm wastegate and l1r shipped to my front door.

i am guess 2g's

what seems to be the best setup for the external- out the 5th runner or mated to the o2 housing like a victory performance setup?
