Hi all,

Need your opinions here. I am trying to decide between Apex N1 DP /w Apex N1 Catback vs RRE DP/RRE Hi-Flow cat/Apex N1 Catback.

I can save a couple of hundred by going with the Apex N1 DP but I have two questions:

1) Will the Apex N1 DP be too loud, since it doesn't have a cat? I am an old guy(28) and don't want a loud, droning exhaust.

2) Anyone know if I will pass Smog in Cali? I know I won't pass the visual but how about the tailpipe sniffer part?

I have a 96GST that is totally stock. :(

Thanks for all your help in this matter.

The downpipe will replace your cat as well, so no, you will definately not pass the sniffer test. However you can just replace the downpipe with the stocker at the time of inspection if you want.

About the sound, it will be loud, but definately not LOUD like you think of from most import exhausts. Our turbo actually creates sort of a baffle that muffles the sound quite alot. During normal cruise it is very easy to completely ignore the exhaust sound, and at WOT its decently loud, but definately not pissed off angry farting bee in a tin can sound like most imports. At WOT I doubt you care about sound as much, so to give you an idea of how loud it is at cruise, you should very easily be able to have a conversation with a passenger at normal tone without a problem.

i have the apexi system and it isn't to loud. Actually my friend with just a magnaflow catback is a little bit louder(i think). But no it isn't to loud where you gotta worry about it to much. I live close to you and i haven't had any problems with cops or anything. But no you won't pass smog.

yea...u'll definietly won't pass smog if u run w/ the apexi dp n catback. u won't have a cat since the apexi dp bypasses it. since i live in CA, i don't have the luxury like other guys to run that system. the emissions here are a #####. i'm running the apexi n1 catback ryte now, but i plan to go w/ the rre 3" dp n testpipe later. when emissions rolls around, i'm just gonna swap the test pipe for a cat. thatz what most of my friends do.

hopefully, i'll have that exhaust system in a couple months along w/ most of the supporting mods for a big 16g. some girl plowed my car at an intersection yesterday. itz at the shop now. they're trying to bring her back to life.

Hey all,

Thanks for the info. I appreciate the help.

Looks like I will go with the RRE DP and RRE Hi-flo cat. If I ever get serious with the car(which won't be for a while) it looks like RRE has a test pipe section for even increased flow.

Thanks again for the help.

It's deffinitly not too loud. I have the RRE DP & CatElem. w/ apex n1 and love it. It's not too noticible to most (none of that honda bumblee sound) . Most who don't know the 4G63 sound say's it sounds like a diesel, very burbily. I will not pass emisions though. I am lucky enough not to deal w/ that where I live (WY) but Just keep your cat so u can slap that on for emisions.

this threads a little old but i was doing some searching, im thinking about buying the RRE DP because they make it special for an evo 02 housing that ive got. are there any other advantages of it over the n1?

i got a custom bend w/ a dunk muffler, buschur racing downpipe, no resonators, no cat...so far, i am the only DSM short of an open downpipe thats as loud as i am, i know a few guys w/ the N1's, sounds nice, quiet, throaty

Thanks for all your help!

I went with the RRE DP,RRE Hi-Flow Cat and Apex N1 combo. I really like it, definately louder than stock but not droning.
