I was at my buddy's house working on his 90-94 accord when I notice they have an external oil cooler that is a little different than most. It's a tube with fins on it that runs in front of the radiator and loops back around. Anybody used one like this on a DSM? The reason I ask is because I have been considering getting a 90 OFH (mine keeps backing itself off and I believe it's crushed and allowing coolant into the oil) and getting an ext. oil cooler but can't find any good deals. He will give me one of his extra ones for free though, and there's no better price than that :thumb:

The ebay seller I got the pic from advertises it as a "Power steering oil cooler" WTF Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks :D

I don't know about the 1G, but the 2G has a power steering line like the one pictured (no fins though). I'm not sure I would go so far as to say it's a "cooling" line, but I guess it might.

Give it a whirl and tell us how it works.

Looks like it should work, there sould be no issues as long as it is big enough line to flow the needed oil. I use the auto trans cooler in the bottom of the radiator for my oil cooler, I've tried others and it all seems to work. A 2 foot legnth of 3/4 inch copper boiler tube like this will work too. I get mine from the scrap yard, nothing like copper to radiate unwanted heat. I've run with this mounted under the lower Rad support and it worked well. The unit in the photo is being used for power steering cooling so it is a bit shorter.

Good Luck!

I will get ahold of a '90 housing and give it a shot. I'll see if I can't get a oil temp gauge. Would monitoring the outside temp of the pipe be an accurate way of testing it or do I really need to get a temp gauge that will check actual oil temp? (I've heard some people boast the cold side of their oil cooler line is cold to the touch and didn't know if it really meant so much ROFL).

Are there any faqs on installing a 90 OFH on a 91-94? Havent seen much yet....

The 1G's have it too. It is just a metal line with no fins on it. I replaced mine with a finned cooler, since it is sandwiched between my FMIC and the radiator.

First off, do you have a 6 bolt 92? B/c I'm pretty sure that the 7bolt 1g's can't use the 90 filter housing. This obviously saddens me. :(

I would move that because all the heat that comes off the mani is going right up to that oil line i would move it to the front driver side area

Just get a trasmission cooler from discount auto or the like. It is way bigger than that and costs maybe 40 bucks.

If that's too much, you need to get out of the performance game.

I don't think your free oil cooler line will provide enough cooling to do engine oil. It may work, if you install it make sure you get a temp gauge. Installed in the oil line not just touching the outside of the tube.
