I jus wanted to let everyone know
I killed my motor I was going down the highway. Pull up to a red light and some ricer in a civic was reving up his motor so I gave him what he wanted. We took off and as you probly know I roasted him and so I jus keep going, and then it happen I blew a head gasket, and as I was pulling off the road I heard a clunk ,clunk, raised hood to find that I also had broke my timing belt.(broke 6 vavles and 2 went into piston 3&4)
But I still Love :dsm:

That's an awesome way to die! You're motor went to heaven for it's selfless bravery.

ouch man I am so sorry!! :(

What are you gonna do now?
OH and hey... how many miles since u changed your timing belt? You are scaring me now!! I got a 95 with 76k on it... dont want the same thing to happen to me. Did you timing belt give u any signs of wear... or was it perfect, then all of a sudden.. snap!?!

G'luck though! :thumb:

it's good to change it ever 50k or so. if it has never been changed on your car...i would go ahead and change it.

It had just turned 68,000 about a week ago it was babied before I started modding it I need to up date my pics and mods. the belt was perfect had no visable cracks tears or any sign of wear so If you are at that mile amount I would suggest strongly on putting one on or having it done.

hello maryville.dude-theres a guy in iron city with 2- 6 bolt blocks for sale on dsmtrader.post date was dec 20th so im sure he still has some stuff.only matters if you are going to rebuild of course.hope that can help ya.

Hey sorry to hear that i am afraid i am having the same problems as you are. Mine jsut happend no later than an hour ago. Once daylight come around and i get my car towed i will really see what happened. My dad saw sparks and parts fly underneath of my car.

Yeah you can get a 6 bolt for around 1200 and install it. It will come with better head, intake, throttle bodt, bigger rods, bigger turbo, and no crankwalk.

My friend got his the other day for 950. We are going to put it in some time next week.

If money is really tight you could just pull the messed up pistons out and reinstall new ones they are around 50 dollars a peice from conicelli.

Your looking at about 700 dollars in parts if you decide to try and fix the engine you have.

Thanks hose101772
But I bought a 6 bolt from a friend last night he is going to help me put it in but it will be after chrismas and that sucks I miss my car so bad...

thanks for letting us know. and I'm sorry to hear what happened....it's the little things that can kill a great car, I even overlooked this myself....I will be sure to change my timing belt soon, as I am nearing 50k in my GS-T.

I'm kind of in the same boat man, I think I blew the balance shaft through the block, I found two holes in the fron of it. I know it wasn't a rod because the enigne ran until all the oil leaked out. No worries though, i got a friend selling me a 98 engine with 50,000 miles for 500. I am going to put a few things on it before i drop it in, new metal head gasket, timing belt, balance shaft is coming out, underdrive pulley, and the new 16g turbo!:thumb: All and all, I am sorry to hear about you car man!!! At least she went out with a bang like mine did, the night before mine went out I beat a S2000 with my 14b powered 95 awd.

I just had mine changed. If you have ever had one break on you there is no way that you would not change it every 50,000 just to be safe. I also got the water pump done at the same time. There is also another belt that should be changed at the same time. I think it is called silent drive belt or something like that. I had a 90 eclipse that I had the timing belt changed on and the silent belt was not. To make a long story short the silent belt broke and pieces of it ended up breaking my timing belt and the rest of my engine. If you take the car to the dealer to have it changed it is $900. I took it to a local shop got all the belts done and the water pump for $475.

~$500 is what you will pay to change one. And a good rule of thumb is to change the T-Belt every time you replace your tires (a set of normal radials should last ~40K mi).

I work at a shop and parts ALONE, at shop cost for EVERYTHING to do it correctly the first time runs up to $250...$310 if you use ALL genuine mitsu parts. The rest is labor, about a 2.5 hour job without rushing it and accounting for car cleanup and a test run to make sure everything is A-OK. Parts list for a complete correct job:
T-Belt
B-Belt
Hydrolic Tensioner
Tensioner Pulley
Idler Pulley
Water Pump
A/C Belt
PS Belt
Alt Belt

thats bull$hit you need to replace the belt every 40K. i wouldn't doubt that it could go at least 150K with out being replaced with light modding. every 50K-60K is better off and recommended by the factory.

Well, I don't think that the factory intended these motors to be revved to 8500rpm constantly (or 7500 for you non ECU modded people), with 20g or larger turbo's on them, with nitrous, cams, NO BALANCE SHAFTS, yada yada. I'm sure if you kept your car totally stock, and drove it like my sister it could last 120-150k mi. Hell, I have one that I just bought that had 90k on it. But for most of us DSMr's who have modded cars that get driven like stink, you should replace the t-belts sooner than the factory recomends.

Are you guys retarded?

You replace the timing belt at 60k OR EARLIER. Geezus christ.

"500 DOLLARS? GOLLY GEE WILLIKERS CLEATUS, THAT'S A LOT OF MONEY! I CULD BUY SOME OF THOSE BOMB DIGGITY ALTEZZA EUROSTYLE TAIL LIGHTS AND A TURBO XS RFL BLOW OFF VALVE TO IMPRESS THE GIRLS AT A THE LOCAL DAIRY QUEEN WHILE MY CAR CHOKES INBETWEEN SHIFTS!"

You own a performance motor. Skimping on basic maintenence items like a timing belt is inexcusable. If you can't afford to do a timing belt, go get a clueless owner friendly car like a Camry or an Accord that has an idiot light to tell you that you need to change your oil/spark plugs/whatever.

yeah really 500 dollars for a timing belt change???? the mitsu dealer installs them for 210 which is still high but thats for parts and labor all in one price. THE TIMING BELT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU KNOW HOW MANY MILES ARE ON IT. If you are questioning how many miles are on yours. IMO i would go ahead and have it changed jsut for insurance. But hell if your motor explodes like mine did and popped the balance shaft out the block and cut the timming belt with debree in the path of the belt on the crank sprocket you got a problem wether you have a new timing belt or not like I do..LOL...
