So... I'm at a complete loss as to why my re-wire isn't working. I drive a 98 Eclipse GSX. When wires are cut by the fuel pump I presumed the "end that goes into the part" to be the end coming form the white connector that connects to the pump and the "end that goes from the harness" to be the end that came from the super line of wires which come from somewhere else in the car.

I was lazy so I picked up a kit which came with a long red battery wire, a shorter black ground wire, a fuse and a relay with pins 30, 85, 86, 87 and 87a.

This is excatly what I did:
1. I cut the ciruclar wire on the fuse in the center. For one end, I soldered the long red power wire and to the other end, I soldered some of the extra black ground wire to make it longer and put a ring terminal at the very end.

2. I routed the long red power wire to the fuel pump right into Pin 30 using a soldered connector.

3. With the fuel pump cover removed, there were 5 wires. Two thicker ones and 3 very thin ones. The thicker ones consisted of a solid black (which I assumed was the ground), a Black with a blue stripe and silver dots (which I assumed was the power), and thin wires were yellow and I believe irrelevent.

4. I scraped away and sanded and area of the chassis and used a ring conntector and a screw to ground the kit-black ground wire. Then I cut the thick black wire (which I assumed was the ground wire) between the harness and the fuel pump and soldered the part coming from the fuel pump to the kit-ground wire. The other end of the kit-ground wire was connected to Pin 85. The ground wire from the harness was left untouched and unconnected.

5. Then I cut the black wire with the blue stripeand silver dots (assumed to be the power wire). I connected the end that came from the fuel pump to Pin 87 and connected the end that came from the harness to Pin 86.

6. Back in the engine bay, I put the battery back, connected the ring terminal from the fuse to the + (red) side of the battery and tried to start the car. The engine would not turn over... the same thing that would happen if the car were out of fuel. The car worked fine before the intall.

What could be the issue? I have a multimeter, is there a way for me to check things? The kit was sitting in my garage for about a year. Could time have damaged the relay or anything?
