I was reading my friend's new issues of sport compact car the other day and it had a whole section on DSM tuning which i thought was pretty interesting. They mentioned pretty much all the free and cheap upgrades that you would learn about on vfaq or anywhere else... but they mentioned taking a throttle body elbow from a 2g and putting it on a 1g because the 1g one is too restrictive or something. Anyone know anything about this?

Yes you can do that or some FMIC kits or UICP kits come with a new elbow also.

is there any noticeable gain from doing it?

Not really... Not by itself anyway. If you have a mid 12 sec car, then upgrading upper I/C pipe, along with this elbow makes sense. If you do it before, you are doing this mostly for looks.
