External or Internal wastegate???

I bought a 20g turbo and don't know if it's a external or internal wastegate. Also can you run a dump tube on both or just on one of the two? If so which one?

Any input will be greatly appricated.

thats a wastegate actuator arm.. if you dont have this then odds are you have an externally gated turbo.

you can run a dump tube on either, if you have an external wastegate I suggest the VP o2 mounted wastegate dumptube..
 
Most 20g's are externally gated. Unless i havent been reading up on my turbos and everyones makin a internally gated 20g. I still like the old tial 40mm externalr wastegate on manifold though.

I have a little flap that on the exhaust side. So does that mean I have an internally gated turbo? And what the gold thing with the gray bar?
And what ever that gray bar is connected to on the exhuast side that what I have. Do I need that gold thing?

Alot of times the "little flap" is left there for sealing purposes when the WG is welded shut.. or removed.
 
internal WG is right where that little flapper arm is on the pic above. External WGs can either be mounted on the exhaust manifold (flapper welded shut) or on the O2 housing (flapper removed & hole hogged out).
 
the gold thing is the wastegate actuator. The flapper is the internal wastegate. Yes, yours is internal if your actuator is attatched to it and it isnt welded shut. "internal" = wastegate on the turbo exhaust housing. "external" = WG on exhaust manifold or O2 housing, as already stated.

Ok now I'am tracking.

I don't have a wastegate actuator. My turbo didn't come with one.
All I have is just the turbo.

So what do I need to buy? A wastegate actuator or an internal wastegate?

Or should I get that flap welded shut and get an external.

Get an external, if you ever want to run some high boost levels. Internal gates dont flow well enough and are sometimes prone to boost creep (too much boost, leads to detonation). Save yourself the headache and build a reliable set up. If it's already internally gated then weld it shut and get a tial 40mm. a Tial 40mm is around $400, but it's well worth it, and will save you from a lot of headaches. Dont take the short cuts, do it right the first time.
 
get the wastegate welded shut ONLY if it's already internally gated, but from the way you described it, it wasn't. If your car is a 1G get yourself a nice 2G manifold from buscher and they'll grind down a spot on the #1 runner for you to mount your wastegate on. Order a tial 40mm too. When the manifold is machined for the wastegate it is simply bolt on. Hope this answers your question.
