Has anyone ever seen themselves or heard of anyone doing aftermarket air on a Talon. Im thinking of doing something with an electric driven pump but was wondering if it had been done.

I'd like to know that too. It seems to me an electric AC compressor would put a pretty heavy load on the electrical system considering the amount of power loss that results when you turn on your AC.

I know that nascar runs a cool system which seems like what you are looking for. Not really sure how it works but I know that they have something like what you are looking for.

I've had an idea mulling in the back of my head for a solid state automotive air conditioner for a while now. Picture an air conditioning system that doesn't run off of belts, takes up very little space, doesn't weigh much, and routes into your factory heater core and fan system for both heating and cooling. The heating and cooling would be 'instant on' and run off of your electrical system. Both heating and cooling would require about the same amount of electricity as a high-end stereo system.

Here's how it works:

Take 1 226 Watt 12V peltier element. Peltiers operate at about 50% efficency, so converting watts to BTU's (watts x 3.414), we would wind up with a solid state AC with about 385 BTU's of cooling capacity. Nothing crazy by any stretch, but enough to get the job done. Now, this will draw about 15AMP at 12V (note the dangerden page has amperage draw at a higher votage rating), so you might want to consider upgrading your alternator if you have other high draw devices. If you don't have a big amp and stereo in your car, the stock unit should suffice.

Take two Danger Den water blocks and mount them to both sides of the peltier:

Run two small 12V electric water pumps.

Run the cold pump off the cold side of the peltier, and plumb both input and output lines into your heater core.

Run the hot side of the peltier into another 12v pump, and run that to a B&M cooler mounted inside your fender well.

You do want to keep the two loops seperate, as the system will be far more efficent this way. Insulating the water lines with neoprene would also be a very good idea. If you mount this system in a project box, and keep it as close to the heater core as possible, you should be good. The loop that will cool the hot side of the peltier can be fairly long, as it only has to dissipate the heat it collects.

Electronics would be as simple as a relay, potentiometer, and a three way toggle switch. Use the toggle switch to change polarity through the peltier. Normal current through the peltier turns it into a solid state AC unit. Reversed current through the peltier turns it into an instant-on heater. The potentiometer can be used to control current, and the relay, is, well, a relay to keep all that juice where it belongs.

I can draw up some diagrams for you if you like, but this should be enough to get you going if you want to go this route. Sure would make for a fun and interesting project.

Matt.

Is that how this device works Enraged78?

not trying to sell this product or something but I had to show an example......I have one of these I use to keep certain items cold in my bedroom and it has been bugging me how it works.....it heats to 120 degrees but at the flip of a switch it goes all the way down to 40 degrees, there is no compressor inside at all, just a fan and a little condensor looking thing with fins on the top which the fan blows through and then makes a stainless panel on the inside get cold....the device runs off of 12 volts and has a power inverter/adapter that steps 110 volts down to 12 volts so you can use it in your home.

Its just been bugging me how this device works and I always wondered.

What about some of the hidden air systems etc that people use when modifying the older classics? I know I have seen while looking around but I cannot remember where now systems that fit under your dash and are self contained that people run in those mod vechilces.

Something like this http://www.vintageair.com/catalog.asp check out pg 18 of the catalogue.

They also build trunk mount systems, its a shot at something Im not sure if anyone has seen anything else this looks not so bad though. Website is a touch ghetto though.

Yup. In the product description it is listed as a Thermo Electric Cooler, or TEC. Peltiers are also known as TEC's.
