Would clipping a turbo lead to less boost creep? Wondering specifically for my 14b... thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but here's my take on it...

Clipping can increase your lag. Not good for street, but good for drag racing. If you're worried about or already getting boost creep then get the wastegate ported and use a decent O2 housing/downpipe. That should be more then sufficient for a 14b. I've got a small 16g with a ported wastegate and it works great, even with a stock O2 housing and not that big of a dp.

I'm getting a 3" exhaust from RRE as soon as my clutch gets here and gets installed, so I was just hoping to have a solution to the problem, before it presented itself. I hear full exhaust can lead 14b's up to 20-22 psi in creep, and that a ported o2 may not be enough.

Boost creep is caused by a free-flowing exhaust path. Upgrading your exhaust system, downpipe, porting your O2 housing can all lead to boost creep. It creeps because your wastegate can't flow enough exhaust gases AROUND the turbine wheel to control boost. Solution?? Port your WG hole as big as you can while still allowing the flapper door to totally cover it. Also, notch out the housing where the flapper arm contacts it, so it allows the flapper door to open up just a little more.

As far as clipping is concerned, on a small turbo like a 14b/16G, you won't notice any more lag with a clip. Clipping DOES promote slightly higher boost time, but also aids in more top end power. Clipping a 14b is useless in my opinion, as the 14b comp. wheel can't flow enough air to take advantage of the clipped turbine wheel. Some gains can be seen on a clipped 16G tho.

I, for one, am not an advocate of clipping. And , to answere your question, it will increase the chance of creeping. Clipping, while it does increase turbine flow, decreases turbo efficiency by as much as 10%. Perhaps more ona 15, or 20 clip. Yes, you will probly run faster at the track, but you just destroyed the ergenomics of that turbo. Many epople have been doing forever, with great success, but its just not a good idea in my oppinion.
