i bought the big 16G, clipped and ported by RRE. People are telling me that my turbo lag will be around 4k rpm (holy sh*t)....... someone w/ the big 16G pls tell me it's not so.... if it is, is there anything i can do cut down the lag.... i'm open to all suggestions since the motor is all apart (being built).....

Thanx for your help in advance......

I was looking over your mods. I did not see and sort of fuel control. Do you have anything?? If not that would be first place to start. YOu can usually tune out 100-300 rpms of spool.

I have not had and expericnce with a clipped Big 16G, but I have with an unclipped in a 2G it was spooling around 3400-3500. Clipping will add some lag. The car I was talking about had a 2.5" DP and stock SMIC. Hopefully this will give you some idea.

I can spool my mutt which is as big as a 20g before 4k. I would say with your mods it should spool 3200-3500. You do need and AFC and injectors.

Well think about this. Clipping is good for making more top end power which is great for dragging. Who cares about the spooling anyways? Tell me this, when during a drag race are you under 4000 rpm anyways?

I had a Big 16G on my old '92 FWD Laser....

I was seeing full boost(21/22psi) at 3600rpms. It's kind of a lazy turbo in my opinion. Mine was clipped 5^, but not ported.

That was with a 3" O2 eliminator turbo back exhaust, hand ported 2G exhaust manifold, 2G mas air/ractive filter/injen intake pipe, starion fmic with custom 2" piping, 2G TB elbow, 550cc injectors, walbro 255 pump, S-AFC, and a profec B boost controller, and an unorthodox crank pulley.

Using the same motor, but changing from that dinky big 16G(550cfm) and the starion fmic setup(small!_)>>>I now have it re-done with a Mutt ETE52(845cfm!)_>>and an Extreme Turbo FMIC, with custom 2.25/2.5" piping. That setup is building 15/17lbs by 3500rpms--(added a lightened RRE flywheel, and removed the balance shafts also_).

When i was purchasing it at RRE they were telling my that to get the full power out of the big 16G you should clipp it. Then people that i met at the races told me that the lag was very noticeable. RRE told me that it the lag was very small, so i got it.

your right about the power idea, but you sounded like you were scared about the threshold/lag, so i was just curious why you had it clipped ( how much...) it does help in power and is very noticable compared to another non clipped 16g w/ same mods

I have a Big 16G, but on a 1G, so I'm not sure if a comparison is applicable, but I get full boost at 3000 if I hold the car at speed with the brakes. This is the only "real" way to answer the question, since it's impossible to watch the tach and boost gauge at the same time while accelerating, especially in a low gear. Now, my Big 16 is ported and clipped 10 degrees, and I have a '95 mani, 2.5" DP, 3" exh/testpipe/Magnaflow straight through muffler. This is also using the stock SMIC with a 2.5" UIP. BTW, I've driven a 2G, and I can tell you that if you're used to the feel of the T25, you'll never have that "instant" surge with *any* other upgraded turbo. Even a stock 1G doesn't have the low end that the 2G does. Performance is always a tradeoff. You will give up low end for more upper end, where horsepower is made. Fast cars make torque at high RPM's, not low RPM's. Hope this helps.

I also have the RRE Big 16q, and I had mine clipped at 10deg. They offer 5 to 15, so I figured it to be the safe bet for a non track-specific application(it is a 16g). Definitely does not spool as quick as the t-25, but then again competitors do not tend to give up after 50'. It seems you have a GST, so mabey the small amount of lag is a blessing in the disguise of traction. Either way, it seems to be a good street turbo and to sacrifice a little bottom end and potential slip for increased top in each gear seems a fair trade off IMHO. Oh yeah, good choice!

Same question my big 16g is ported and clipped seems laggy is it because its clipped? is it normal for it to spool at 4k or so rpms? i do have a small turbo housing leak and also a small intercooler pipe leak will that lag spool time?

I have a 2g ported manifold and 1g o2 housing ported with a megan racing dp 3".

I had a fp big 16g ported & clipped. It spooled around 3k - 3300k on my 2.3. "cough cough" dusty thread though! 9yrs old!

Yes, any pre-turbine or charge pipe leakage will definitely hinder spool up time and overall boost produced. Fix those leaks.
