Hello.
I have a question.
Why everybody says 50trim turbo is better than 57trim on pump?
Im talking about Garrett turbos, with stage 3 turbine wheel.
Im upgrading my 50 trim to 57 and im planig to work @t 16psi on pump.
Thanks for advice
:talon:

I run a Garrett 57 trim on pump gas. I run at 22 psi. I have had no problems and I love the turbo. It's got a bit of turbo lag, but when it finally wakes up.... Boy, does it come on strong!

The 50 trim has a lil better street manners and is better on pump because it is a smaller turbo. Also spools a lil quicker.

The trim number isn't a designation of the size of the turbo, it is a ratio of the inducer and exducer of the compressor or turbine wheel. A 57 trim turbo can flow around 43 lbs/min, thats about the same as an evo3 16g. The 50 trim flows 49 lbs/min and is a lot more efficient at higher boost levels than the 57 trim. All of the manufacturers rate the 57 trim higher than the 50 trim and I don't understand how it can make more power than the 50 trim when it is maxed out at 43 lbs/min.

Trim=(inducer diameter/exducer diameter)^(100)

For a standard 50 trim it's: (2.13/3.00)squared, times 100.
2.13/3.00=.71
.71 squared=.5041
.5041x100=50.41
50trim
The trim can affect the efficiency of the wheel by the physics involved in the way the air is compressed by the wheel, cooler compressed air makes better power with less octane. That's my take on it. Mark

Thanks for comments.
Anyone else are running 57trim turbo?
Somebody says 57trims flow same amount of air tahn evo3b16G... is that true?
Hey Catbox_95 , can you tell me more about your ride? Like what i/c are using, hp, e/t ?
Thanks again :thumb:

I'm really not too sure about the post about a 57 trim being equal to a Big16G. Side by side, those two turbos are night and day different. A Big16G physically isn't any bigger than a T25, so I just can't see how they claim to squeeze the same power out of it. I stayed away from a Big16G because it's tiny and costs more than my 57 trim. The Big16G is a bolt-on turbo, so it's easier, and there is less lag, so some people like it for that. Lag means nothing once the 57 trim comes on boost, and it would absolutely kill a Big16G. And for those of you who will defend a Big16G to the death, I say it's simple: Horsepower = more fuel and air in, more fuel and air out. I can get more fuel and air in with a bigger hole, and get more fuel and air out with a bigger hole. Conclusion: A Big16G does not flow the same as a 57 trim.

My intercooler was custom made by a local shop. I'm not sure of my horsepower, nor my e/t. I went to the track before I got my SBR header and ported my header and turbo, and I kept having troubles on the big end of the track. However, I do have a good number to measure the power I'm putting out:

My car, FWD, crappy (2.20) 60' time, yet 99 mph in the EIGHTH mile. That's pretty reputable. I've searched the times on this site and notice that other people running 99 mph in the eighth mile are running low 11 second quarter mile times. Of course, I can't claim that I can do that until I physically do! But I did run 99 mph in the eighth with my 57 trim and FWD.

Anyone else opinion would be appreciated.

A 57 trim flows between 50-53lb/min not 43. A 50 trim has a 2.122" inducer & a 3.00" exducer, a 57 trim has a 2.230" inducer & 2.950" exducer. A 50 trim has greater efficiency at lower boost levels due to its slightly larger exducer, but at higher boost levels a 57 trim will make more power. A 57 trim will make alot more power than a Big 16G.

Big 16G= 1.892" inducer & 2.680" exducer
57 trim= 2.230" inducer & 2.950" exducer

Thank you. Sometimes I'm a simple kinda guy, and just say "hey, mine's bigger". But you put it in technical terms with real numbers, so I like it. LOL

In all seriousness, I love my 57 trim. Huge power when under boost, not too much lag, and a great street turbo because it's easy to drive around town "in N/T mode". Can't beat the price either. I paid $600 for mine, brand new, including tax.
