I'm driving my car to California next month to live there and I need a ring job done. I have about 5-6 thousand dollars to spend on the car and i am looking for suggestions on what type of work i should get done while the engine is all apart and what will pass emissions. I live next to Extreme Motorsports so i am trying to get them to do the work. I have a 95 gst with few mods but i just came into some money i am going to dump into the car - speed only

For $5k you could completely build a motor, turbo, exhaust and still have money over for dinner. Rough numbers:

- Built 6-bolt bottom end ~$2k
- Built head to suit ~$1k
- 3" turbo-back exhaust ~$700
- Ported, unclipped big16 ~$800

Plus small change for installation kits, piping, beer, etc. You could leave your head mostly stock (get it cleaned and decked) and save some money there, since you probably don't need to do anything to it. Go check out the upgrade guides on this site and some of the vendors to see what they offer in the way of bottom-end deals.

California smog will not detect anything done to the bottom end of your car. Internals cannot be sighted by a smog tech, so nobody knows the wiser. Hence the reason I want to build up a 2.4L stroker motor. Smog won't know the difference and I get a huge power gain. The only problem you will run into is managing the fuel and spark for any extra work you get done. If you get head work or bore/stroke the engine you are pulling more air, which means more fuel, and most fuel mods are illegal here because fuel turns into smog. This is the stickler, getting more engine that doesn't need more fuel....yeah, right. Anyway, this should answer your question, if you need more info ask.

thanks - do you mean that after market fuel pumps, injectors and fuel computers are illegal? I dont have to pass an inspection just a smog test cuz I am not registering in CA, I just need the inspection cuz I am in the militiary. So, will I be able to work around the fuel thing?

Wait a sec, I know you guys dont take all the mods off of your cars every two years to get an inspection. So, how does one...err...go about getting the "hook up"
