I have an oil leak that is driving me crazy. I have had the timing belt off 3 times so far. I have all new seals in and new gasket with a rebuild on the engine. I can only think of 1 thing yet that may cause this leak. There was a grove in the crank where the front main seal is. I was told that this grove may cause a leek like mine. I have also heard of an item called a speedy sleeve. The sleeve is a thin sleeve that fits over the crank and seals the main seal again. Have any of you ever heard of such an item? Also if you did have you used them and how did it work if you did? Do you know who sells them?

Also my car is a 92 Eagle TSI AWD. 4G63 Turbo.

I have heard of the sleeve idea. sometimes it works and others it don't. They are really common of V-8 Chevy balancers. If I remember correctly they are pretty much hit or miss. If you get it on right it works otherwise it just ####s things up worse.

It is kind of a bandaid fix but it can get you back on the road.

How bad is your groove?

What seals are you using? aftermarket or factory mitsu?

On thing I have noticed is that the seals are realty loose in the front cover, well at least on mine they were At first i though it was just junk aftermarket seals, but i went and got a mitsu one and it wasn't any better. I smeared a little permatex ultra gray on it and put it in. No leaks after 5000 miles.

The seals are from a Felpro kit. I did not think the grove was bad, but you brought up a good point. I did have the cam seals leak around the outside of the seal. I replaced them with CR seals and used some sealer as well. Do you think that the crank seal could do this? It is not a bad leak, but I hate any oil leak. thanks.

YEAH! I noticed this too and did not like it. Just push the things on real easy by hand! I thought it was junk seals but I've had no problems with the aftermarkets. If you can get the sleeves for these then try. Better than the alternative (crank!)
Just my .02 cents.

it's very likly that it is leaking around the seal. get a tube of ultra grey by permatex, and clean everything up really well with some brake cleaner. Don't put it directly on the seal though. Give it a really thin coating on the outside of the seal and see what happens.

I will have to take the thing back apart in the next week or two. Will have to post back what I find.

I have used speedy sleeves before, never on a car but I am going to start looking for some to put on my camshafts. All the ones that I have ever used were made by CR. I'm not sure if anybody else makes them or not. I have never had a problem with using them, but I have heard others don't like to use them. I have never been giving a good reason as to why they don't like them.

One other thing can be done to fix it other then a sleeve, prematex, or replacing the crank. You can fill in the groove with weld then machine it done. We do this all the time at work on various shafts. I would try the sleeve or prematex first though.

I think I found my leak? I put in a Rock oil pump and front cover, but the oil seal pushed out of the front cover behind the oil gear. How does this seal work? Does it seal on the shaft or the gear? I am replacing the oil and crank seal together.

Also I found antifreeze. The water pump is new, but there seams to be antifreeze coming from a hole on the bottom of the pump below the sprocket area. Did the pump go bad already? I really am upset with these Rock products.

New oil pump shaft seal, front crank seal, and new water pump. My leaks seem to have gone away? I hope that since I posted it is fixed it does not start to leak again. Thanks for the help.

Thank You very much for the update. Often times there are resolutions but people don't post them. This will help others down the road as they search.

Yeah, I had the same issue. I couldnt find it because it would only happen when I had the motor running. I went, bought a black light and some die, and helped chase it down. It turned out to be that seal behind the pump sprocket, AFTER  I replaced the front main and all the other ones, and after I put crush washers behind the tensioner bolts. After that, everything was good. Just make sure u coat the seals next time, and they will install more easily.
