hey what do you guys think about this? I thinking about 3" exhaust all the way from the turbo to the stock muffler! the reason i want to keep the the stocker is that i like the stock muffler and i don't want the exhaust system to be too loud! police here are happy ticket writers (noise pollution) and they don't like us ricers at all!! what do you think how much horsepower loss, compared to a straight through muffler? all opinions are welcomed ignore my profile for now i have a new 2g project, i wrecked the 1990 beast back in may and have transfered all parts that will work from the 1g to the new 2g! i will update profile shortly :thumb:

Seriously???

The stock muffler will be quite a restriction, what is the point of having 3"s of diameter in you exhaust if you are going to choke it down at the end. You might as well have 2.25" exhaust if you ask me....

It's honestly a waste for the 3" then because of the major restriction you're putting at the end. I'd say to either gut the stocker to try 'en get some flow out of it or
get a higher flowing muffler, I have an ATR exhaust and I don't find it that loud at all. I like the fact that I can drive by a group of cops at a gas stationi and I don't get so much as a glimpse from them.... :)
I'd go with a different muffler to compliment the exhaust because if not then the exhaust you put on is a waste of money. Will it give you gains above the stock exhaust, yes...but you could have gotten those same results with a smaller diameter exhaust. You have alot more potential you could gain by switching to a higher flowing muffler.

The stock muffler will be a huge restriction, if you really care that much about the noise, you could get a straight through with a removable silencer, that way when you do want to get on it you will have all your power available.

Also, a 3 inch catalytic converter will help keep the noise down. For track days you can then take the cat off and put a test pipe on.

Can you get a chambered 3" muffler that will fit on the vehicle without too much trouble?

The resonator helped quiet mine down a bit. Just run a cat, at least 1 resonator, and a muffler that is not straight-through, and it should be quiet enough to get you by.

why not just get a muffler that has a 3" in and two 1.5" or 2" outs?

Im running the bosal catback (2G) and it's a baffled muffler and quite quiet with no cat/resonators.

well my buddy has a dyno! we will put the 3" and stock muffler on and dyno it and then we will put the straight through on and dyno it. i love to experiment with stuff like this! i wanted some opinions first to see if most of the opinions match the actual final results. just to let you know i have not posted on this site much but i am by no means new to the dsm scence when it comes to performance. we will do it i will post the results and will see what happens! thanks for all input :thumb:

I thought it was bad around here, but i hit a speedbump just a bit too fast and my muffler fell off. It was just clamped on so I am going to put it back on when I get some time and there is daylight. I been running 3 days without the muffler and no police problems. You wont get pulled over unless you are dumb and step on it when cops are around, which you shouldn't be doing in neighborhoods anyway. On the highway, there is no sound laws so it doesn't matter.

As for lowering the exhaust noise, get a muffler with a removable silencer. The silencer will knock the exhaust down to a 2, 2.25 or a 2.5 so you won't hear it as much, but then take the silencer out and it turns into a straight through 3" pretty much.

you must have good police!! here in ga the police have nothing better to do than harass us import guys!!! a buddy of mine was given a ticket because the cops heard his blow off valve!

I dunno what you guys do to your cars or what you do when you drive them to get tickets for exhaust noise, but I have a full 3 inch turbo back exhaust with a straight through magnaflow muffler and the thing isn't very loud at all. I also have a 3" high flow catalytic converter on it too, tho. It keeps it well within all of the decibel laws they have around here and in chicago and all that. Even the turbo itself works as a muffler. That's why there have been many turbo cars that come straight from the factory without mufflers. I believe even the srt-4 just comes with pipes and no muffler (at least the one we have at school has no muffler and it's stock).

Oh, and also, if you are still using your car on the street and it's not solely for racing, then I would suggest you still use a cat. I don't know if anyone has any significant dyno proof to show that a test pipe gives you better results than a high flow cat, but according to the instructors I talked to at my school (universal technical institute), the catalytic converter will actually help keep the exhaust hot and even make it hotter, causing the velocity to still be high or even be higher, which is exactly what we want on our turbocharged cars. We didn't find any significant gains with the cat, but we saw no downfall performance wise for using the cat. Besides... I still passed emissions with my high flow cat

But yea, I say just go with a 3" turbo back with a high flow cat, straight through muffler, and just don't get on the car at all if you think there could be a cop around listening.

That's what I was looking for when I got my magnaflow muffler, but they didn't have tip designs that I liked. The one I got were the best they had for the outlet size on the muffler.

If I ever change it again, I'm going to get a 3" straight thru muffler and get this tip:

PS If you want to run with no cat, I suggest AT LEAST one resonator. My car is pretty loud even with two resonators. I'd like one just to have it more aggressive sounding, but I don't want to risk it.

well, you could do all of that and then use the electric cut out system... before the stock muffler...

how would the 3" piping and stock muffler affect daily driving? gas mileage?

I just got done doing this project right here^^^^^^^all day today. I had the magnaflow 3" in and 4" out, and boy was it quite. When I had no cat on there it was louder yes, but not unless I went wot. Now after today's project and completing my mission of taking out my 3" cat and muffler and replacing it with those rre tips( which I cut at the end because i dont like the angle there at so mine are flat) my shit sounds like a jet engine. Wow so loud its crazy. I'm going first thing tom to put either my muffler on or a resonator thats sitting in my trunk. Its going to get me fuced in socal. But I'll tell you guys what I think of it tom. These tips totally look stock(especially if you cut off the angles) I love it. I have my stock look again and I'm in love. I hated that god damn can on the back of my sh1t that said "hey come rob me please". Ill post pics tom of what I did and how I did it. :dsm:

Got to me before i could  . yea put the ECS(electronic cutout system) http://blacktrax.net/ecut.html right after the downpipe. a few of my friends have it and its niceeeeee. wont get ticket for having a 4" tip or loudness and can still unleash the power with the touch of a button :thumb:

all we are doing is minding our own business! if anyone here lives in peachtree city ga then they know exactly what i am talking about! a local guy here was pulled over and given a ticket because the cops told him that his stock evo 8 rear wing was to big! i am not kidding the cops here really , either have nothing to do or dont like us imports!

i know of at least a few guys who run an exhaust system from Thermal R&D with a section cut out and a borla muffler welded in place, and its just right for them. no 3k drone but roars when WOT. just a thought.

yes please post pics. i want exhaust on my car but i hate the coffee can look, and love the stock look... and wouldn't u be able to add these to the end of your muffler? not just replacing it with the tips

Yea you would, I wish I would have just cut off my can tip and welded on the twin tips but I just replaced it all. ANd tonight I'll be putting on the resonator cause its just too loud, and if its still to loud I'll cut off the tip of the muffler(instead of selling it  ) and weld it in line with the exhuast system to make it sound like it did before. Ill post pics tonight after I get done with the remaining tasks.

Yeah do that experiment for me too. I am going to extract as much power as possible out of my exhaust as well.

if u wanna go with quiteness try and atmospheric dump tube hahahahaha...but inregards...why don't u try a electronic cut out...my friend has a 444whp trans am and he closes that thing and it sounds like a friggin 6cyl but when he opens it...OH MAN...that .655 lift in that cam really shows its self....WOW...take care guys....someone buy my full t4 gt35r turbo setup !!!!!
