As the questions states. I failed emmissions this morning. The (HC) failed but the (CO) passed. When looking in there repair guide it says the causes are bad plugs, bad plug wires, Problem with the EGR or a vaccumm leak. As we all know my car has the hugest boost leak at the intake manifold. I know this is probably the cause but I also wanted to know who has passed witht he EGR block-ed off.

Thanks,

I figure I'll replace the plug wires but if I have to, when I have the IM off this weekend to fix the gasket(again) I will hook the EGR back up.

My car passed today with a bypassed EGR valve and a hi flow cat (hollow). It's a 95 tsi btw, barely squeaked by on the HCs at idle.

Make sure the car is at operating temperatures. HC readings being high indicate an excessively rich condition btw, especially if the CO readings are in check. How far off were the readings? 220ppm HC is the limit in Texas.

The EGR valve mainly helps out with NOX (oxides of nitrogen) readings, which are only tested in the lucky states with dyno testing.

220 is the limit here also and I was at 396.
I know the rich cindition is from a massive intake leak at the intake manifold. I jsut wanted to make the EGR wasn't to blame.
I have a high-flow cat also.

Thanks,

my car didnt pass with the EGR blocked because I live in california and they apply vacume to it to see if the engine studders. It might pass if the dont test it. Good luck!
