i have a greddy type s BOV on my eclipse that was on there when i purchased the car. i just noticed that there are two connections for vacuum lines on the BOV, but only the upper one has a line on it. What is the lower connection for and are there any advantages/disadvantages to not using it?

That lower nipple is to allow it to release quicker. It doesnt have to be hooked up.......

But if it is then it can do away with some of the 'sputtering' sound when you change gears at lower boost. The sputtering noise is compressor surge which is not good.

If you have a t25 you can run a hose (i believe you need a 1/4 hose, 2 feet of it should work) from the lower nipple from the BOV to the compressor nipple on the turbo. You do need a boost controller to run it to that though.

Hope this helps....

i don't have a boost controller, but i don't want to have compressor surge and hurt my turbo either, what should i do?

I mean its NOT like a urgent problem but after a long time id think it would matter. You could also try loosening the screw on the BOV a little bit.

If its making the sputtering sound alot
then i would.....

go to boostcontroller.com and pick out a controller you like
Cheapest is like $50 shipped i think
Then go to autozone or whatever and get a hose
Then go on VFAQ.com and they show you how to hook up the boost controller
And just run the hose you bought at the auto parts store from the lower nipple to the compressor outlet on the turbo instead of capping it off

i would probably need to get an aftermarket boost gauge before i get a boost controller wouldn't i?
