Engine Rebuid Help!!?

I have a '95 TSI with rod bearings that are on their last mile. I don't know much about the engine internals as I'm pretty new, but have been told by everyone that I need a new/rebuilt engine. My questions are: Would it be better to find a 1g engine and swap it for my 2g, or should I just rebuild what I have? Also, while I'm in there anyway, what are some basic steps/parts I should replace/modify for more horsepower (limited budget and know-how)?

If its an option I would definatly recomend a 6 bolt engine (1G engine). It really depends on how limited your budget is. Set aside AT LEAST $500-$700 for machine work for it to be done right. And start shopping, this site will provide all the info you need for different vendors. As for the know how, there is a goldmine of knowledge about DSM's around here, so search around and if you cant find what your looking for, ask.
