I just got the car and im looking to replace the intake and exhaust system. Im looking to run low 13's in the future. However im on a budget. What intake is affordable and gives the same performance gains? K&N ? Please tell me where i can find an affordable intake online.
I want to replace the exhaust also. Should i buy a 2.5 inch downpipe and a 3 inch crush bent exhasut, or a 2.5 inch downpipe and a 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust? I can get by inspection; should i run a straight pipe or get a high flow cat? I have heard bad things about straight pipes, like that they create boost creep. Please help me out. I need a cheap downpipe, exhaust, and intake. ANy web addresses would be greatly appreciated.
-thankyou, Matt

do not buy a press bent exhaust it is not worth it. take your car to a local muffler shop and ask them if they can build you a exhaust! 3" shop around I jsut got

3" DP mandral bent
3" cat back
3" o2 housing
muffler
resinator
test pipe

all that for 550 no tax and that includes install

Mandrel-bent 2.5" is fine for 13s.

I do not think that is true. And you will lose a few HP by using a cat, even a high-flow one-- use a straight pipe if you can get away with it.

A straight pipe in place of a cat will increase your chances of boost creep somewhat. Boost creep occurs because the exhaust is flowing really well (except for at the O2 housing). The cat will add some restriction to the exhaust and decrease chances of creep. The creep can be taken care of though with a ported O2 housing or O2 eliminator and open up the wastegate hole and put in a larger flapper.

If you are on a budget though like you said and can get away with it, the testpipe will save you at least $100 over a high flow cat.

you will also get much more power and a much growlier sound from your exhaust with the test pipe. hhmmm better performance, sound and cheaper, screw the high-flow cat. not worth it, if you won't get busted for not having it.

RNR full turbo-back system.. this includes 3" o2 eliminator downpipe / test pipe / 3" catback.. then your practically done with the whole exhaust system. 600 bucks for that.. you can get it cheaper at your local muffler shop, but at least you know RNR specifically makes theirs for DSMs.

as for intake.. i got my filter and adapter from ebay for 30 bucks shipped. then look into the dejon hard intake pipe.

Well, I guess that "increasing your chances" makes sense. I suppose I was just disagreeing with the blanket statement that test pipes will "create" boost creep. And yeah, if you get an O2 eliminator downpipe then you don't have to worry about it anyway.

not "cheap", budget!

I made mine from a combination of purchased and fabricated parts:
- 2 1/2 downpipe from MachV/Buschur Racing. You need a flex section in the part, this is the low cost way to do it. ($175)
- high flow cat ($60)
- Walker muffler. Purchased with pipe, see below.
- 2 1/2 pipe, aluminized mild steel. $160, with labor, hangers, muffler. Also, this is mandral bent - the only way to go. Finally, the shop used large radius bends.

So for just under $400 I got a good performing system. Enough power for me, a tad noisy (but I can tolerate).

Good luck

Kyle
