I am currently running no exhust, and hollowed out cat, i only did this because it was supposed to be a temporary thing until i got exhaust. and damn is it loud. TOO LOUD. is it bad for my engine to run no exhaust? i to feel a fireball every once in a while . but my main question is, will my car perform better with performance exhaust or no exhaust?

thanks.

No exhaust is best. I think that running no exhaust and feeling slower is just an illusion. You make 10 times more noise, so it should have 10 times more power right? ;) The same deal when someone adds an N1 with no silincer to an accord and swears it adds a ton of power. A big part of power perception is sound. So to answer the question, you will make more power with no exahust, but compared to a good 3" system the gain is minimal and not worth the extra noise. For you or for the rest of us ;) On an NT car, it is usually better all around to runsome kind of a free fowing exhaust than nothing at all.

I ran open downpipe and my car also felt alot slower than with my exhaust on, but thats with the T-25 which doesnt create as much pressure as a large turbo(Correct me if I am wrong).Corey

Which is a better cat back exhaust: Tanabe Racing Medallion, Apexi N1 or the HKS Hiper-cat, for my 95 GST

Your car feels slow cuz the turbo doesn't hit as hard and you get more top end. I noticed the same thing when i switched from a full 2.5" turbo back to full 3" turbo back w/ my 14b. Also, by running w/ an open exhaust, you have the risk of getting boost creep. If your boost levels creep too high, you're probably getting knock and timing retard, which really causes a loss in power.

I agree when I was running open exhaust it felt slower but my track times were faster. This was going from stock to open. I think it's just an illusion like he said

Actually a t-25 creates more back pressure because it's smaller and is more of restriction. regardless though I still think it's an illusion.

Sorry for takin so long on this...Im a little new to 4 cyl but on my V-8 i know if i run too short of exhaust my valves will cool down too quick and warp them...im not sure if this is a problem on DOHC but i thought id put in my 2 cents :)

Why do you get boost creep when you go to bigger exhaust rather than stock? I went from stock to a 2.5 dp with just a straight pipe and muffler from there on, no cat and with stock exhaust no cat it had no boost creep. now with bigger exhaust it goes to 12psi, than creeps to about 20 or so, why does bigger exhaust do this, should i open the wastegate flapper area more?

i took my muffler off and droped .9 seconds in the 1/4 mile. it also did the 0-60 .7 seconds faster.

When you free up the exhaust path the exhaust gasses would simply rather travel the path of least resistance, or straight through the turbine housing and out your new high flow exhaust. Its less restrictive than the WG pasages. Opening up the WG flapper "exit area" helps tremendously. Opening up the hole will help a little more. I got my creep down from 22 psi to ~14 psi on my old 14b/2.5" turboback.

This is true if you are tryna run a nitro system exhaust on pump feul, if you can imagine how short those are. Dump system on turbo will likely affect turbo before it reaches the valves. On a NA vehicle there will be a problem, but if your running a straight pipe out through the stock location your ok, turbo or NA. I agree with the imaginary loss of power, I work with a guy that has a CRX with a straight pipe and B16a, he gutted the whole thing and runs 13.5s all day. It used to be his daily driver and when I heard it I swear it sounded like a 350 with a glasspack and no muffler. BB sound with 4banger pull. Back pressure is important, this is why people dont run more than 3 in unless its a diesel even the SB and BB guys. The reasoning is in the exhaust systems velocity or flow out the exhaust. If its too big the gasses will build up and lose velocity actually creating more backpressure and heat. In severe cases when the hot exhaust gasses pulsates if there is too much cool air cuz flow isnt quick enough it can be sucked back in the exhaust port adding to more spent feul in the chamber and cooling the exhaust valves rapidly and heating up again rapidly causing warpage. There is my nickels worth.:thumb:

i'm running no muffler and it droped my 1/4 mile time by 1 second. it also droped my 0-60 .7 seconds
