is there anyway to set ignition timing with lower cover off?
i heard there is some way you can shine the timing light on the cams and they should be 1 tooth off or something like that?is it true?

bump...can anyone with there car timed right shine a timing light at there cams and tell me where the marks are at please...thanks...

you can't do it without the lower timing cover. I could tell you where the marks are approximately at, but that is not good enough. It has to be almost exact or you will either have poor performance or wreck your motor. Your ignition timing is not set by looking at the cams but by looking at where the mark on the crank pulley is at when the the number one cylinder fires.

From your first post it sounds like you are confused and stuck half way between setting ignition timing and cam timing. Pick one, then go to vfaq.com and find the how to.

that is all im looking for is the approximate...and it doesnt list it on the vfaq...vfaq only list it using the lower timing cover...im in the process of purchasing a new lower cover because mine broke...so please tell me the approximate and i will be more than happy...thanks...

for the 10minutes it takes to put the cover on just do that, don't be so lazy son. Trying any other way in my opinion is a waste of time and will take you forever.

its difficult for us to help you
do you have:
420a motor
4g63t motor
4g63 motor?
I can't think of the 1.8 l engine code... 4g65 or something I don't know.
Anywas..what your wanting is not easy..you HAVE to have the cover..it has the markings on it.
If you have a 420a motor..i hope you ain't timing it....cause you can't time a 420a motor...
anywas..you need the cover....period paragraph.

Yes, Is that a rock in you timing belt or are you just happy to see me.

dude i stated above that my lower timing belt cover is broken and another one is on order...

Dude you need to settle down, Rushing your project will give undesired results, A week wait is easier than a 2 month wait. Trust me your car isn't going to hate you anymore, infact your car will love the time and patients into doing the job CORRECTLY.
