Is hacking the air can the best option for the 1g cars or is there a better option. Is there a complete cold air intake system? I saw the dejon tool one's but i'm not sure which would be the right one.

Hacking the aircan is just a free mod until you can afford an actual cone filter and intake pipe. If you have the cash just buy a filer.

The general consensus of the "Old School" DSM'ers is not to hack the aircan unless you are going to wall off the engine compartment. The stock arrangement is a cold air intake from the factory, so by cutting the can open, you're raising intake temps by 20-40 degrees. Since the ECU looks that MAF temps when it decides how much timing it's going to give you, hacking the can to open engine compartment air is about the worst thing you can do.

I'm probably "old school" in my philosophies about DSMs... I threw my aircan away and didn't block anything off. If anyone is "old school" it's John Shepard and when he was running 11s on a 16G he had no aircan and no block off thing.

I think the "middle school" DSMers are the ones you are thinking of. They are more scientific. But they seem to have to put more effort into their cars to go fast.

The "new school" DSMer is clueless ;)

Batman, what kind of temps are you seeing at your MAF after a WOT run? I was seeing 130+ on a 50 degree night with no can. With the stock can, I was seeing only +5 while the car was moving.

i cant comment on the temperature difference, since i have not installed the intake time gauge yet. but i can comment on the timing end of this discussion. at 20 psi on 93 pump *cold air intake* timing advance at the top of 3rd was 20*'s. on my very next run, i removed the cold air pipe from the turbo and ran an under hood intake . the logger showed 16* of advance at the top of 3rd and the car *felt* noticeably slower. actually timing was down at evey rpm point.

Umm.....well thanks for the info, though i can't really say that is helped much. I think it only confused me more. But i will learn eventually. So by what your saying is not to hack the air can and leave it the stock way? Or is it better to hack it up and remove the silencer and small honeycomb? Or is it best to buy one of those dejon tool intake systems?

Speaking of confused, why are you asking mod questions about a 3s on a DSM board? Or, do you own a 1G DSM and just haven't updated your profile? I'll assume the latter, and give you this advice-

Leave the stock air box alone until you make some HP. A stock DSM will gain next to nothing by modding the air can, and using the "cold air is always better" logic, will probably go slower. You could buy some bling bling homey-chromey intake, but you would not be getting the most HP/$. Boost makes these cars go fast. So does un-corking the exhaust. For the price of a fancy intake, you could buy a used cat-back, which will net you 10-15 HP. A test pipe is so cheap, it's nearly free. Another 10 HP. Buy a $30 MBC, and an $80 FP from a 3s, and you'd be in the 13's, easy. Do some research. Most of the pioneers in the DSM modding world were part of Club DSM, (dsm.org) and you'd be wise to read some of their info. Read about the honeycomb at VFAQ.com. These are questions that have been asked and answered 1000 times. The info is out there, use it.

The answer to this is I never checked because I don't care.

But what if i like my open air can because it sounds better??? ;) Mine is hacked, but I have the 1.8L. Its not like its producing major HP anyways...

Yeah i'm gonna update my profile right now. I now have a 93 talon tsi. Mike9146 i have read up a lot and i'm trying to decide on which exaust system to get right now. Its between getting a apexi N-1 muffler and going to an exuast shop and having them make 3 inch cat back pipeing for me(if i can ever find a shop close to me that does 3 inch manderal bent). Or ordering the buschur raceing 3 inch manderal bent system. I am just trying to follow the stage 1 modding. And it says to hack the air can and remove the honeycomb and air silencer. So i was gonna do that but then somebody said it was a bad idea so now i don't no.

Hack the air can, but make a heatshield out of aluminum to block off heat from the engine bay.

The bushcur 3" hangs REALLY low by the rear axle, I'm not a huge fan of it.
The N1 fits much better. Were I going to use a "off the shelf" exhaust that's what I would buy.

Yeah i would also like to know more about the air can hack and heat shield. Some of the dejon tool intakes i was looking at look good but for the 3inch ones it says for 20G or larger turbo's. Does that mean it wont even fit on my 14b now or does it just mean that it works best with larger turbo's(obvioiusly). I plan on doing intake, then BOV,the boost controller, then exhuast by the end of winter. And i'm looking to get an intake cause i've done all the maintence on my car. thanks
