When doing a rebuild, what all should I replace? What are the things that I should replace as a precautionary measure? I am new to DSM's, and I really don't want to spend the money on a rebuild just to do it again. Any info would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Gaskets and rings are an obvious must. I reused my rods but I had them shotpeened/polished and resized with ARP Rod bolts, if everything is in good shape you can reused pistons which I did with my MKIII Supra. More than likely you will need to make a machine shop visit so have them go over your head to see if it needs to be milled and to see if you can reuse the hardware in there.

I reused all sensors , head hardware and I opted for the topline gasket kit which came with new valve stem seals. I bought a topline oil pump, but if I do it again I am thinking I will rebuild one I have. You can get gears for the pump for $50ish and all the seals come with topline gasket kit.

For a real budget build up you can get a complete topline rebuild kit for $500 and it comes with everything except rods. Run a search for torque plate and read up on that, I wont try to start an arguement about those in your thread.

Do you have any web sites for this stuff? What about Ballance Shafts, I am noticing alot of people are getting those removed/replaced? Is this a good thing? I am not really trying to do alot to this car yet. I just want it in great driving condition, so I can drive and restore it and get a better knowledge for how it works. What are some major problem areas to look out for on these particular cars? I have a '90 GSX. I am thinking of getting a better BOV, any suggestions. Thanks for all the info.
I ma trying to do a rebuild because the guy who rebuildt this before I bought it really isn't a trust worthy kind of person. Thanks again.

Before you do anything, make sure it needs a rebuild. If it isn't broke, dont fix it. I got 90% of my stuff from dsmtrader and slowboy. Ebay, summit and RRE wound out the other 10%.

W/o a turbo upgrade an BOV change on a 1g is kind of ricey. A basic 2g upgrade is a 1g BOV...

I'd punch the block out .020 to .040 (depending on what he did) and drop in wisecos on eagle rods, use a OE headgasket and clevite bearings. You can just get 1g OE replacement pistons... It is more cost effective the 2g piston on 1g rod thing looks kind of dumb cost vs the eagle wisecos... In the grand scheme of an engine the $700-$800 for nice rods and pistons is worth it.

I agree about the BOV. My question is why was it rebuilt to begin with? Did it seize up? If it runs and doesnt leak, I would just run it until it pops, before rebuilding it again. These blocks can withstand huge amount of punishment considering....
