Cochrane,
Allright, i just bought a 96 tsi awd, i have a whole bunch of bolt on stuff for it, i am new to the dsm style car but i am not new to the turbo 4 banger world, well my question is i have a set of adjutable cam gears that i am going to install, and i was wondering if any of you guys knew which was a good way to set them up (advance/retard) still running the stocker cam, my old saab 9000 i managed to squeeze an extra 29 horse out of the stock cams, but i had a baseline to go with, now i dont and i am looking for imput. how much boost can you run on the stock engine, will it take 20 psi from the stock turbo, fuel pressure, where is a good place to start? i am on a limtied budget so new turbos and cams are not possible, for now, thanx for the help guys :talon: :thumb:

It's best to get the gears tuned on a dyno. They won't do too much with stock cams though.

20 psi on the T-25 sounds about 5-6 psi too high. I'm not positive since I don't own a turbo, so let some of the other guys answer.

I know you said new turbos were out of your range, but truth be told the stock one is not going to hold up to much more than stock boost levels. I'd sell the cam gears and get a good 14b turbo. There is one in the classifieds for $135 right now...bolt that on and you'll get a good increase. Follow the tuning guide on this site for more guidance, but I would not put the cam gears on until you exhausted easier and better performing options first.

Wow, LOL...everyone replied at the same time here

I would not run more than 15psi on the T-25, but many people argue about this. Every car is different, but my timing started getting pulled at anything past 15psi on the stocker.

I dont know about the cam gears at all, it doesnt seem to be a popular mod with dsms until you get further down the line of mods.

As far as fuel pressure; stock on a 2g is 43.5 and since you have a 255 pump I would guess you will be fine at stock fp. The t-25 on my car would handle about 16-17 psi but barely. You need to get a logger of some kind so you can see whats going on. But I would have to agree with the above that 20psi on a t-25 is out of the question.

It looks like you have most of the basics from your mods list minus some hard IC piping and some porting that you could do yourself

Check the tuning guide like suggested and you will get the hang of it

Good luck

Running pretty much anything above stock boost on the t25 is too much. The t25 is a turd. If you are on a budget a 14b or small 16g is the answer. They will produce much more power than the cam gears on stock cams....

just my two cents. :dsm:

Sell the cam gears for something like exhaust, intake, fuel pump etc. Theyre is no set position for the cams gears, you really need to degree them properly.

Besides you would gain next to absolutely nothing from degreeing the cams with the setup your on now.

And without any fuel mods, dont even bother touching the boost, especially on the t-25. It wont handle it, and its not worth it on the stock turbo honestly.
