i did a search for this and couldnt find anything so here goes, i have heard this bov on 3 cars an it sounds different on each one, on a supra it sounded like a loud fluttering, on a 90 talon it sounded like a quieter fluttering and on a 92 3000gt vr4 it sounded like a high pitched whistle. why would it sound different on each of these cars, i was thinking maybe because of the boost pressure of each car is different, but i have seen those insert things you can buy for the hks that make it sound different, wouldit be this? thanks for the help

the inserts do change the sound some, but there is also an adjustment screw on the back of the bov that will adjust how much flutter you hear or how much of just a high whistle you hear.but you are right the amount of boost does change the sound of it.on mine when i had mine venting (which i am not anymore :thumb: ) at low boost there was little whistle at all and the more boost there was the more whistle and flutter...hope that helps

Flutter is bad my friend... The reason why the valve flutters is becuase one has the adjustment screw too tight for the desired psi so it doesn't open completely. A friend of mine has a 95 gsx 6-bolt swap and his ssqv squeals and screams. Now that is partially because he has the gold insert but you get the idea. They are supposed to be like a high pitched whistling scream. hmmmm

:talon:

Mine has always been the "loud" one around town it makes a RFL look stupid :p The adjustment screw is about 3/4 of the way out.

I recently took the sound insert our of it and I LOVE the way it sounds now... it is so quiet... if you are accelerating through the gears normal driving you dont hear it at all

the insert will change it, but the car's actual setup will as well. mine changed sound when i went from a vented w/ maf setup to a vented with maft setup. the only thing i can figure is that the fact that it doesn't stumble when it vents changes the pitch of the bov.

Compressor surge is a very bad thing. You can't just stick a BOV on a car and not expect to have to adjust it to prevent compressor surge. You can go some turbo's fast if you are having massive compressor surge.

This is a little off topic but does anyone know if there is a difference between the japanese and the US version of the bov. Cosmetically there are some differences but I was wondering if the spring was stiffer in the japanese version.

The reason I ask is that I have a SSQ BOV off of a skyline from japan. I get some flutter at higher psi which pisses me off. I have the adjustment screw all the way backed out and this still doesnt help. Im considering trying a different spring... what do you guys think...?

My freinds vr4 has no flutter what so ever. Im considering swapping bovs with him for a day to determine if there is a difference in the bovs.

i didnt mean flutter as compressor surge...you can just hear the high and low chambers...i guess it is just more of a two-toned whistle

go there and you will here different applications of the HKS SSQV on different vehicles. to get the loudest effect from a blow off valve place it after the turbo before the intercooler. just somewhere along the IC piping before the intercooler.

there is a video that works on that site think its a honda going by and it has the purple insert. It seems to deepen the tone quite a bit.To me it sounds a bit too high pitched with stock insert.I just ordered it with purple insert and hope it sounds good.Buddy has the rfl turbo xs and I like that think actually.
I will be trying to vent it and see how that goes and can always mover my maf into blow thru configuration if have a problem.See how it goes.I think read its easier to vent without problems on a 1g.They do make that recirc adapter too of course.

I would have maybe went for turbo xs or another brand but like the no leak design of the hks ssv.Hope it works out good for me.at

without a maft or map setup your 1g will run terrible vented. i didn't think mine was that bad until i re-circulated it and finally got the blow through maft setup.

Well already have maft and maf just draw thru just have to throw it in the upper pipe,no big deal couple of couplers and done deal. :)
