Can anybody steer me in the right direction for a good deal. I 've been scouring local junk yards for quite a while and it looks like computers are gone even before the car appears there the first day or I 'm terminally late. Not to mention there aren't many turbo dsms in there to begin with. I need prefferably a '90 one (which is even more pain in the ass I guess) or I 'll just go through the trouble of swapping what needs to be for a '91+ Thanks.

Ahh.. correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought only 95 TURBO DSMs had EPROM ECUs.
Yep youd be wrong on that one, except your right if you only meant the 2gs :thumb:
For 1gs it varies, check in the classifieds on here and you might have some luck, i have a 90 EPROM ecu laying around but i dont think youd buy it for the price i want.(i got ripped off so its worthless to sell it cheap)

You are wrong. The very early 1G's originally came with the Eprom ecu and gradually they started making less and less of them every year as followed. When the 2G's were introduced, (1995) those cars did come with the Eprom and then after that they switched to a different setup.(OBD2)

so, you are saying that my car does have a eprom ecu?

how can i find out if my car has the eprom ecu?
what are the advantages of having a eprom ecu anyway?
what are some disadvantages of not having a eprom ecu?

i hope someone can clear this up for me as well.....

No, if you have a 95 than your car does have the EPROM. The obd2 works with the ecu, I only mentioned it beause I was explaining that only the 2G's had it;not 1G. EPROM's are very desirable ECU's for many reasons so you should be happy you have one. It will come very handy if you ever get DSMLink :thumb:

Sorry for all the confusion

Ben, how much do you want for it? I don't even know what the 'normal' price is. The yard wants $51 on a regular day and half of that on discount so it is a good deal. PM me not to clog this thread. Thanks.
On the other note, when I got the Laser it was totally stock from an older woman. Her husband told me however that one of the things that was done on the car as maintenance was replacing the caps per his mechanic suggestion. I opened the ECU the next day to check it and, yes, the caps are new but the whole thing was 'crap'. There's probably a good chance that the mechanic just swapped it but who knows, don't wanna blame people for nothing.
The previous owner of my talon was into DSMs and he told me that the ECU was an EPROM but it looks the same as the other one with that empty corner on the board. The guy was quite honest and told me everything about the car that I haven't even noticed so it seems strange that he would lie about the ECU. The only pic I can compare it to is the one in VFAQ. May be I 'm missing something and they 're both 'good' or I just got screwed twice. Does anyone have any link with a pic of a 1G EPROM one other than VFAQ. Thanks.

I got several other pictures if you need them. That one is from a '93 AWD EPROM ECU before repairs. I have pictures of '90, '91-'92 versions but from '91-'94 they pretty much look the same except for the EPROM version sticker.

Steve

Every Eprom ecu I have has an "e" on the sticker and the non-eprom ecu's have an "m". My 91 eclipse came with one and so did my 92 gvr4.

Thanks for the pics guys. Both of mine have a pretty big area on their boards at one of the corners that is not occupied by any components at all. Just a green area. I guess it's proven now that I 'm screwed, in a way :(

The question remains then: Where do I get one for a decent price and what is a decent price nowadays? (although this may be changing rapidly lately due to the introduction of the 1g version of DSM link) Thanks for the replies.

Dsmtrader.com is a good place. I just got one thats less than a year old from a former mitsu mechanic for 225 and yes its an eprom. Email me if you want to see pics of it. Nice silver case instead of a brass one. Shiny shiny board on the ecu.

I 've been gone for a few days, anyway..

Yea, if you can post a pic of yours, it would be great (the case would be good too). Do all eprom ones have silver case? Also, does an "E" appear on the outside sticker or on the board or both? I was told about a couple of full service yards near by that have ECUs but the guy said they most likely wouldn't let you open it before you pay so that info would be useful. Thanks again.
