when I got my Spyder I was honestly looking for a 1G AWD... I just found a REALLY good deal on the turbo rag... I had planned on making a rally car... not auto-x... you know REAL RALLY... dirt and stuff... does anyone here rally? or has anyone had bad luck rallying on the DSM platform... I am now looking to build a rally car, and I am wondering if a 1G AWD DSM would be a good choice... hey... while I am at it... does anyone know if they are keeping the 4G63 in the Lancer EVO VIII when it comes to this side of the pond?

these pics should answer some of your questions

edit: incase that pic looks slightly different than the underhood shot of normal 4g63's its ok. in the 4th evolution of the lancer chassis they decided to make a major change in the way the car was balance. in wrc all the mitsu rally cars are driven on the left hand side (ala united states), don't ask me why they just do, but the car's in their previous versions were heavier on the drivers side. they then decided to rotate the drivetrain so that the weight of the navigator and engine on the passenger side weighed nearly the same as the driver, tranny, transfercase, and peripherals on the driver's side. the odd thing about this is that the car in japan is thus slightly right side heavy due to the fact that the car driven by just a driver will have almost all its weight on the driver's (right hand) side. when the lancer evolution makes it debut here in the us the car will be slightly better balanced due to the fact that the engine and driver are on opposite sides and will balance themselves out for more neutral handling between both right and left hand turns.

The 1g AWD would be a good platform to work with. But I hear the upkeep is very expensive. Since alot of things take alot of abuse, and break down.

yea i'd imagine it would be pricey ot keep up, but then again so is any rally car.

Anybody want to rent an EVO VII for a weekend? If you're interested there's a rally shop here where I live that rent's it out for weekend races. Just 25,000 a weekend. Damn nice car though....

So you've got the rally bug huh? Good luck, I think the rally bug makes a heroin addiction seem like a vague craving for something salty. Anyway, you will not want to build your car unless you feel like spending lots of cash. For a rally prepared (decent) 1g dsm I would expect to spend about $15-17k depending on how well you prepare it (includes $3k for the car). Then you will need a service vehicle (15 passenger vans work great) cost about $6k with a good trailer costing $1500-1700 new. Running an event for the weekend costs about $1500 and this includes entrance fees, hotel, meals, etc... If you have not raced before you should seriously consider just buying your first car. You should get something with very little horsepower to start out (light FWD such as VW or similar). It will make you a much better driver in the long run. Rally is much more about the driver than the car and it takes time to develop the skills. Some maneuvers in rally are not intuitive and need to be taught by someone who has done it before. I strongly encourage you to go to a rally school (Ski Sawmill, Tim O'neil, etc...), go to some rally crosses to sort the car out, and then enter your first event. You do not want to spend a ton of money on a fast AWD car, entrance fees, and travel just to go ball it up on the first stage because you watch WRC. I'm not being mean, I've seen it happen. Go to Ben's rally page and find a good used car. Talk with your local SCCA chapter and find out who is rallying, talk with them. If you go to look at a car, try to take a Tech Inspector for rally with you. They will help you judge the condition of the car. Ask more questions if you need more answers.

I really wanted to give this a try , but I saw what a friend of mine was spending a year & thought better of it . I thought just owning my car was expensive !

1G DSMs make great rally cars. go to an SCCA Pro Rally and you'll see lots of them. I am hoping to buy one or build my 92 into in the future. I currently am on the crew of C2 Rallysport, running a 91 GSX. Wish us luck at LSPR!

Thats awesome ! So does that mean that I might see you on Speedvision
sometime ?

honestly I was looking to buy the car... do the minimum mods to run the closest class to stock I could... and as I get more money (and practice) I could upgrade, and move up in class... I already have a trailer (it happens to be sitting in Arkansas, if anyone from WA state is going down there and wants to pick it up for me... or someone down there wants to bring it up here on a road trip or somthing...) but I am glad to see that there are people who like to turn with their DSMs... it may just be me... but too many people are wrapped arround 1/4 mile times... sure straight line acceleration is great... but I uasully beat the V8s arround the corners... that's where our cars REALLY shine...

Turbo, I doubt you'll see me on TV. I'm just a on the service crew. They show crews from time to time, but usually not the PGT guys.

Is this going to be a sleeper rally car too?

But if you have the funds, I say go for it. I think the majority of the expense will be spent on safety equipment...then the mandatory bin of spare parts. Don't forget a BFH! You'll need it, I promise! ;)

see if they run rallycrosses in your area. just like autox but in the dirt or grass. You can run it with street prepared car as long as you aren't bumper dragging and run 18" wheels.

I am from the Kitsap Pennisula in WA state... there are a TON of Rallys in my area... I am, however currentally stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska... are there any Kitsap, or Olymipc pennisula Washingtonions, or Anchorage Bowl Alaskans here?

I love WRC I watch it all the time on speedvision. I use to "rally" (in parenthasis because my rallying was on dessert roads with friends for fun and casual competition not a real sanctioned event) my old Subaru Wagon GL. I'd love to build up a DSM for rally but it just costs too much for me to pull off on an amature or professional level. If anyone has any DSM rally links post them for me would you? I'd love to see a DSM tearing up the gravel/dirt.
