well ive already sent my block out to the machinist to get the .020 overbore and 2g piston/1g rod combo... now as im assembling it i read on here that a line bore is absolutely necessary if your going to use arp main studs.

is it absoltely necessary? should i just use new bolts instead. i know that my machinist wont want to do anymore work on this block becuase he is not familiar with it and he got burned when he quoted me a price and it took him twice as long to do the work....

so basically my options are use the studs without a line bore OR just get new bolts and use them... i need some advise here there is too much money tied up in this engine to take chances so i am coming to the PROS for some advise.

thanks for all the advise along the way guys.

I heard yes ... however the machine shop I use a lot ( and supposedly also builds motors for ams ) told me it's not necessary ... it's only for people with paranoia or if there is something wrong with the line hone to begin with.

I would just get new bolts if you are not going to have it line honed. The studs put more stress on the block and distort it causing the main bores to be out of round so yes you need to have it line honed if you go with the studs. Its always a good idea to have the mains line bored when doing any machine work to the block. You dont need to have it done no but its a good idea.

I can't tell you for sure either way.... what I can tell you is I have had my studs in 2 different blocks..

the first one I did not have line bored.. it had major bearing issues and crankwalked 2 times. ITS A 6 BOLT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the second one I had line bored... the machinist said it did not appear to NEED it but cut through anyways to make sure it was good.. I have not had any problems with this motor..

not saying that A thing to do with the problems.  but I dont know that..

also to be noted, whatever the torque the machine shop used to line bore it at, should be the same torque you use when assemblying the motor

I have always heard that you need a line hone/bore when using ARP studs. I went this route on my car with success. If the motor was damaged and that is why you are rebuilding it, I would go with the line hone anyways. I remember paying $100-200 for this procedure; quite a bit but why skimp out when you are already investing so much money into the engine? Last, I have heard alot of DSMers say that the ARP studs are not required, even in very high HP cares. Correct me if I am wrong, but people like Shep use stock bolts on their motors.
