Cam Gears Needed Or No???

i have just anbout everything done on my car that i'm gonna do, maybe water injection next but i still have stock cam gears, is it a good idea to get them??? i hear people say the cams can be off, how would i determine that???
 
Yes, it is a good idea to use cam gears. Otherwise the timing belt won't have anything to hook on to and you will bend valves. :D ;)


























You only need cam gears if:

A) You have aftermarket cams that need to be dialed in
B) You want to play with the mechanical advance/retard of the cam/valves.

Or

C) You just want to look cool.

A timing light would definitly NOT help out with cam timing, only ignition timing. We are talking about actually making use of aftermarket cam gears to dial in the cam to true TDC. My HKS 272's were off 6* (crank speed) when we degreed them.

Tevenor, yes I agree with you completly. My old Web's were miserable in that respect.

You guys won't find a set of HKS 272's for sale. Consider getting either the new FP grinds, or the Comp cams, which are particularly nice as well. It's a tossup, both are an excellent buy.
 
6 deg was not that bad compared to my Web cams that was off as much as 30 deg.

True. here is some more cam timing info you may be interested in :thumb:

Advancing Intake and Exhaust : This will provide the car with more bottom end power, and will decrease top end. Advancing both cam gears will move overlap earlier but will not increase it.

Retarding Intake and Exhaust : This will increase the cars top end, but will decrease low end. Retarding both cam gears will move the overlap later and but will not change the amount of overlap.

Advance Exhaust Only : This will help the cars top end, and it reduces overlap.

Retard Exhaust only : This will help the cars mid range power, very useful for cars with big turbos / big cams. By increasing overlap, It decreases lag significantly. Doing this will bring the boost on all at once. Very common DSM modification.

Advance Intake only : This will increase overlap and helps the cars bottom end and mid range power. This mod will bring the turbo on all at once, although isnt a very common mod for DSMS.
