The whole 5 years I have owned my car it made a horrible rattle on shifts/decel or when at the right RPM. For ever I thought it must be a heat shield of some sort but after putting in my 3" exhaust and removing the shields attached to the old one and checking the others attached to the car I couldn't find the rattle. I finally tracked it down, to my suprise it was the driveshaft vibrating on the collar coming out of the transfer case. When I wiggle the driveshaft it seems to have a little more play than I think it should.
What is wrong? Is it an adjustment or a bad bearing?
Some friends that have a shop also told me the splines on the transfer case where it mates with the trans were so worn if I romp on it too much I will likely strip it out.
They don't look too bad to me and don't seem like the first place in the drivetrain I would expect to break but I thought I would go for opinions.
Also if the bearings are worn I could rebuild the case but if the splines are going I think I would be better off getting another used one in better condition. Thoughts?
It seems the rattle has gotten a little worse but it may just be me getting paranoid. Could this turn in to a bigger problem like the transfer case seizing. Mitsubishi says it did have the recall fixed so this should be at least the second t case.
Is there any silacone or urathane I could put in the splines to tighten it up a little bit without gluing the two together. It seems It would be better anyway if there was something a little forgiving taking up the initial force.
There is also a free dyno day coming up but they only have a 2wd dyno.
Can I take off my drive shaft and dyno the front wheels or will the LSD give me trouble.
I can drive there and back (abut 5 miles each way) with the drive shaft removed right.
And while I am here one more question.
I have never fully understood how the LSD delegates front to rear power, I have heard we have a 60%-40% split 60 rear 40 front is that right. If so how does it do it.
