ClutchMaster Stage 4 HDCB

Hey guys what are your thoughts on this clutch w/ a fidanza aluminum flywheel. I'm considering on using this over the ACT2600. I have a 98 AWD GSX my goal to have a 450HP street car and would like to build it for future power as well. Appreciate your input in advance. Enzo

I am not disagreeing with your decision or anything like that, but I was just wondering if there was a reason you are not going with the ACT 2600, it's a proven clutch.

A four button hub? Will it see a lot of street? That's a lot of stress on the tranny and chatter. HDSB 2500?

Reason against ACT 2600; increased pressure at the throw out bearing and crankshaft thrust bearing.

I know you're trying to beef up your clutch for future power and all,
and I'm not baggin on your decision, but this is what I have to say about puck discs.....

I've got a six puck unsprung disk, and it sucks, it came with the car....
Those puck disks are hard as hell to street.
They chatter like crazy, and bite pretty hard. "Transmission says "
Just adding a lightweight flywheel to your car requires relearning how to launch.
Call RRE or Shep and ask them about your decision.... and then ask them what they recommend for your goals.

I ran one all last year. They chatter a little but not as bad as the ACT unsprung 6 puck that I have now. Very streetable but they are hard on the flywheel (all puck clutches are). We still have one in the red T66 car that is 2 years old and still going strong.

Goods:
Way more tame than a ACT 6 puck
Holds butt loads of power
Light pressure plate for you 7 bolters
Doesnt chatter much for a puck clutch

Bads:
Less tame than ACT street disk setup
Hard on the flywheel
Expensive when compared to ACT setup

If you do get a fidanza flywheel, which I do not recommend by the way, make sure that you have it balanced as well as checking to see if the dowels are in the flywheel snuggly. They have been known to be out of balance and sling the dowels out. I would suggest an ACT flywheel.

how much for that clutch package? I'm still an act 2600 guy and the main reason I don't like puck style clutches is because of the chatter. My friends evo has a sprung 6 puck and it sounds HORRIBLE when it chatters both in his car and if I'm driving next to him I can hear it in my car if the music is down .. that's how loud his chatter is. Puck clutches are too graby and too hard on the trans too. The trans is already a weakness for us. :thumbdown

Hey guys thanks for the feed back.

I don't believe the chatter is as bad as the ACT puck clutches. Also the pedal will not be as heavy as the ACT 2600 or 2900. Like SWORDFISH and TURBOLARRY said it wouldn't put as much pressure on the crank as a ACT 2600 or 2900 would. I see it as another added safety to potentially help prevent against crankwalk.

STRM TRPR it does have a spring hub design which is why I think the chatter will be very light (I HOPE) . My understanding is that this clutch is designed for heavy street use as well as drag racing. To me this seems like the in between solution offered by Clutchmaster. The ClutchMaster 2500 is a stage 3 clutch and is only rated for 300 horse (or slightly higher). Given my goal that is why I thought a stage 4 would be a good match.

What do you guys think?

I personally have a Clutchnet 6puck with a sprung hub. Chatter is present only if you beat the hell out of it. Street driving is good after a long break in period and it is supposed to be good for 400 hp.

Hey guys after doing some additional research I found that the picture I attached is misleading. I did pull that picture directly off Clutchmasters website. Just to clear things up the product I'm inquiring about is a 6 puck sprung hub and not a 4 puck.

If anyone else has any personal experience with the Clutchmaster FX400 series/Stage 4/HDCB or whatever else they call. Please let me know what your thoughts are. PM me if you'd like.

I don't know how similar they are but I have a RPS2600 6-puck/sprung with Fidanza Alum. flywheel, and I don't think it is too bad.... It definately grabs hard, but that is what they are supposed to do. Only way around that is those $2,000+ clutches that the supra guys run.

Clutch masters doesnt make a 6 puck sprung for DSM's. Its 4 puck just like the picture. The only setup they have with 6 pucks (well not really even pucks) is their Sintered Iron disk.

Jeff, sorry pal but your information is not accurate. The picture I posted is inaccurate including some of (not all) the information on the website regarding this product. I know for a fact that the Stage4/fx400/HDCB is a 6 puck sprung hub design. The info they have is very general and obviously misleading.

The HDCB should be a 4-Puck unless they just changed it, and I mean just. I've used a number of these clutches in street cars and have been very impressed with the results. I also run a 6 puck unsprung in my Talon, and can say the difference with the sprung hub is noticable. All clutches other than OEM replacement take a bit of getting used to, I think you will like it when you use this.

You're right sorta. I called and they have just started offering the 6 puck sprung design but only if its a special request. The tech I spoke to said that if you do not request a 6 puck then you will get a 4 by default. He also said that 99% of customers will get the 4 puck because the 6 puck special request has only been offered for about 2 months. So you're right in that a 6 puck sprung stage 4 exists, wrong it that all DSM stage 4's are of hte 6 puck design.
