External gated helps turbo spools faster?

I'm about to upgrade turbo. The SCM50 sounds like a good idea. I always wanted to get FPGreen ever since it came out. I saved up every dollar I earned and bought the 2.5" SS VP O2 external setup with Tial 40mm gate dump-to-atmosphere. I'm thinking of selling this setup and just go with the internal gate 50trim.

IMO, SCM50 is cheaper and provide relatively the same performance as FPGreen. Many people running it and loving it. My questions to you is: Is externally gated turbo spools faster than internally gated assume everything else is equal?

Who is currently running scm50 internally gated? Any creep issues? If you were given the option to go with External gated O2, would you do it?

For those people already running this turbo with externally gated O2. Do you like it? Any creeping issues? Is it loud enough that makes you wish you had internally gated one?

Thanks! :thumb:

I just got a 50 trim, internally gated and will know more to share in a week. I would hang on to the external parts. I understand the internal wll not creep if you set the boost at 22+ PSI. I have a friend wit a Buschur 20G and it's external and loud but you want function over form(noise!). Nothing worse than creep. I had a 20G on my Conquest and I wired the gate open andwould still hit 27PSI by 5500 whan 20 PSI was the setting. Imagine if that GB54 would rev to 7K+? I'd have been over 30 or more PSI. The motor was built but without tuning tools. I ran 2940cc's of fuel. If I could have afforded external Iwould have gone that way. Definitely the professional way to go for a reason. Mark

I have a scm 50 trim internally gated. No boost creep problems at low boost, or high. Great turbo that you wouldn't be dissappointed with. I could be wrong, but I don't think external gates will help spool any better then a internal gate, so that's not really a issue. What comes into play with your set up (with the vp o2 external dump) is that you will have a quicker spool because of how well it flows compared to a 2g, evo, or whatever cast 02 housing you probably would be running if you had a internal westgate. Backpressure is what hurts spool time. Now that you already have the set up and all you need is a green I have a hard time not telling you to get the green. I understand that it's a little more expensive, but another turbo you know you won't be dissappointed with. I don't know.

When I initally got my 50 trim I sent it to fp to have them rebuild it. There was extensive damage that was going to end up costing me a lot of money to rebuild it. So I asked them "do you have any used greens lying around that I could buy?" Their reply was "essentially you're going to have a garrett version of a green if we rebuild it." This was with a stage 3 turbine wheel. For whatever that's worth. Good luck

I have an external gate and I can say it deosn't help with spool because a friend with the same setup and internal gate spools the same I do. External is nice if it's recirculated back into the exhaust .... but it sounds like crap if you just dump it. I have the external dump setup right now and hate it.

My 20G was a "true" 20G with a TD 06 compressor housing
and I had a 06 turbine wheel in a TD 05 turbine housing. Boost was slow to build. 15 PSI around 3500 but then it just pulled. I was running 2940cc's of fuel, that's like 4 inj's @ 735cc's each. A 20G is good for 30 PSI. Mark

ive got a clipped and ported td06 20g with a HKS 45mm external wastegate (dumped).... i actually did notice a spool difference with this setup over the interally gated setup. nothing drastic, and its hard to compare because different mods here and there. as for the noise, its REALLY loud, and i personally love it. seeing the look on peoples faces is priceless when you spool and it opens up. :D :D :D :thumb:
