Hey-
I have a 6-bolt motor that I am rebuilding to swap into my 2g GSX. It comes with the big rods, but I've been debating about getting forged eagle rods. There is a nick on one of the pistons, so I'm gonna be replacing them for sure. I want reliability and power, but more emphasis on reliability. Would a forged rod/piston combo be ok for that?

Also, how would 1g pistons be with forged 8.5:1 pistons? I did a search and got mixed results. Anyone have experience with that? I don't want to put 2g pistons on them because the cost of machining costs as much as forged 1g pistons, and its also another margin of error.

I only plan on maxing out my e16g, so I dont' want an 'overbuilt' engine. Price is not an issue with anything, but I don't want to over-spend and buy things that aren't necessary.

Thanks!

Well you wouldnt need forged internals to max out a evoIII 16G would you? You can buy Pro topline coated 1G pistons. If you're looking for the upped compression, you could deck the block and get a metal head gasket. I am building an engine with Ross 8.5:1 pistons on big rods, but I'm not finished so I can't give any input, sorry.

Aren't the metal head gaskets thicker than OEM? If thats the case, then that would lower cylinder compression.

Yea, I know the e16g doesn't need forged internals, but pistons aren't that expensive. Were there any modifications you needed to do to your 1g rods to put the Ross pistons on?

yea metal headgaskets lower compression.

If you order 1g ross pistons they will go right on to the rod. Considering an evo3 16 is a small turbo I would just do 1g rods with 2g pistons and deck the block and head to get a little more compression. Stick with the stock headgasket for that setup.

Sorry, I got turned around on the headgasket. But the Ross pistons required no modification.

How accurate does the machining have to be to put the 2g pistons on 1g rods? I want to leave as little to chance as possible.

oh no man ... machining can be waay off it won't matter the farther off the better. Of course it has to be right on the money....

I didn't mean it like that... I just wanted to know how hard it is to do it 100% correct, no margin for error. I try to not leave anything to chance, and one less place for the machine shop to screw up, the better.

ross pistons will not bolt right on stock big rods. those aftermarket pistons are floating pin with spiral locks on the wrist pin. you have to special order the ross pistons with a press wrist pin. then they will press right on no problem

Ross makes three kinds of wrist pins, two of which can be floating or pressed in. The third, Tool steel pins, are for full racing applications only and must be requested. The Ross pistons slowboy racing stocks have the pins that can be pressed in, I have a set in my garage right now.

I think the whole purpose of forged pistons is to have floating wrist pins. I mean 2G pistons are strong enough only down side is having pressed in pins.

The machining the 1G rods is not tha complicated, shave the small end and bore to match the 2G wrist pins. I would recommend a shop wwho has done the job though.
