Just wondering what the possible downfalls of powerbraking my a/t car for better takeoffs were. I'd only be doing it when racing, which will only be every so often. Any advice or horror stories regarding power braking?

Powerbraking my auto GST has been no prob for me but i let off at 6 psi and 2300 RPM i dont let it sit there. My best 60 ft was 2.8 doing this so it cant be that bad dude.

ummm...don't know how to break this to you but a 2.8 60 ft time is absolutely HORRIBLE, even for a fwd....

i was playing around with power braking my friends auto gsx.. I found that the car doesnt seem to really like to be power braked.. it launched better without building boost for some reason..

Hey now,
SOME of us like having an auto. For instance.... Can you sip on yo forty while blasting some fool with your .40 while swapping gears? Thought not. But for real, My auto Trans-Am was fast as #@%#@%#@%#@%. After some "minor" mods it was pulling high 12's in the quarter. I picked up an auto Eclipse GS-T and am going to put some "major" mods on it. Looking for mid to low 12's with it. I mean to each his own but let's not dog us peeps who would much rather have an auto.

not dogging at all.. i just keep jokin around with the girl I know that has the auto gsx about her car.. I told her the msot effective mod she could do is convert her car to manual.. i assume it would not be to overwelmingly difficult.

A stock auto DSM is slow. I think the ECU makes the boost solenoid pull boost back when power braking. A boost controller fixed this probelm quickly. I pulled a best of 1.81 60ft on the stock converter. You don't have to upgrade it to race it. It'll take just about anything you give it. If you're going to powerbrake often then make sure to change the luid often and use only misubishi tranny fluid. Some people have used redline too, but I'd just use what's been mostly prooven to work. When you power brake let the tranny cool down between runs and never power brake for more then five seconds.

This is a tech question not a flame fest. If that's your opinion that fine but there's no point in you posting sinceless comments.

Nano,

At what rpm did your stock converter stall at?
And at what rpm does your high stall converter stall at?

As long as you keep in mind not to power brake for more than 5 seconds at a time, and allow your tranny fluid to cool down in between, it should be fine. It only becomes a problem when you heat your tranny fluid up too much.

Last year I remember there was this dummass kid with a A/T 97 Gst that was talking all this stuff about his car ("it'll kick any cars ass!" and bla bla bla) So I asked him to do a quick run down a straight. He got ready at one end of the lot and started to powerbrake it. Then all of a sudden there was this huge crunching sound followed by sparks and the hood flying off the car. When I went to look at the car the engine had torn itself off the motormounts. Wow!

Wow 1.8 in an auto. Id like to ride in an auto dsm to see what its like!! I be they build boost quicker do to more load as well huh...

I was able to stall my stock TC up to 3800rpm like my highstall except it felt like I had to hold on to the brakes real hard and felt real bad on the tranny. On my high stall I can get it there a lot easier.

Here's a recent vid of me launching on my highstall TC..
Crower cams stg 2, Dunrite high stall TC, 18psi, pump gas.
