Just as the title says, the stock turbo is now history. I don't really want to spend too much cash, and I've narrowed it down to 3 options.

1 Pick up a used T-25 in good condition

2 Pick up a used 14B, and buy the install kit

3 Pick up a new 16G, and buy the install kit

The problem is that I dont have enough cash for the fuel upgrades, so I was wondering if I could run the 16G (if thats what I decide on), at around 12psi of boost, and if I could even do the same with the 14B.

Mods:
K&N, UIP, 1G BOV, MBC, 2.5in turbo back, boost and AF guages

The local shop said that I should have no problem running the 14B @ 15psi, and should have problems with a 16G until 12psi. I would like to do the fuel mods in the future so I'm really leaning towards the 16G. If the 16G isn't possible please let me know if I can run the 14B without the fuel mods. I dont want to spend much more than $800, so let me know what you think.

In my experience, a small 16g at 18 psi with stock injectors results in 115% injector duty cycles. But that's with cams, so with a stock engine I'd expect that to be a bit lower. I don't think 16 psi would be much of a problem but you'd probably be cutting it close.

If you want to be safe, I'm sure you could run 14 psi with a small 16g. I ran 18 psi with the 14b on stock injectors for a while too, but I didn't have the ability to check the IDC then, and I suggest ignoring the a/f gauge unless it's a wideband because it didn't tell me shit when my IDC was 115%.

No way on the t25, go 14b or 16g depending on cash. The t25 can not compare to the 14b IMO. I put in a 14b in Dec with a homemade install kit. The cost was about 250$ to put it in including the price of the 14b. I run about 15lbs now and the egt's never go over 825C so I think I am ok on fuel which will be addressed next.

PS the 14b at 15lbs kills my old t25 at 15lbs without a doubt

If you can afford to do 3 now, do it. Otherwise, go with 2. The 14B and install kit won't cost much more than a T-25, and you'll end up with a setup that will take 16G's, 20G's, etc. As for the new 16G, you should be fine turning the boost all the way down on your MBC. That will end up using the wastegate setting as the boost limit, which I think is around 12psi.

16G's are dirt cheap right now. $500 for a small, $550 for a big, $600 for an EVO III.

Or....you could look for someone upgrading from a 16G and get one used for about the same price as a used 14B!

Well I think I have made up my mind. I'm gonna go with a big T28 I think. The main reason is that my parents will think I'm putting a stock turbo in my car, and I've done some research and found that they compare well with the 16G. I also plan on ordering a walbro 190 fuel pump to go along with it.

Just a couple questions. What should I be able to run for boost with this setup? This car is my daily driver, so how bad is it to drive the car with the turbo on its way out? There is minimal shaft play, but I hear a whining noise under boost, and theres a little oil blowing out of my exhaust. I'll only drive it about 200 miles to work and back until the end of next week, when my turbo should be coming in ( have to wait for a check to clear and I'm ordering the turbo on tues).

Well, when mine went out, it coated my whole intake system with oil. We had to dump it out of my IC. Ick. It sucked cause I have a GM MAF, so when I got the new turbo on, the hot-wires were covered with oil and it ran like crap. Scared me for awhile.

Also be sure that you don't get metal shavings in your oil if you get too much shaft play.

Be sure to drive nice and easy, and stay out off boost and it should last another 200 mi.
