When I was doing my t-belt I broke the lower cover that goes right under the cam gears, so now the top cover rubs so I took it off is this ok to do? will it hurt anything?

If i were you i would put it back on. I took the one off my wifes car because the strut tower bracewas hitting it when i nailed it.... well the time come to get the car inspected so i took it to a place and while the guy was putting on the pickup from the #1 plug wire, he had a rag in his hand and i'm sure you know what happened..... yep got caught in the cam gears, jumped timing, bent all the valves, marked up pistons, flat spotted the bearings. What a bill they had to pay....$3700

xactly..i still have mine off but I have to be SUPER careful around that thing

Right after I bought my DSM, the timing got off some how, I think it had been replaced and not tensioned right. I had the head rebuilt almost 500 dollars. When I put it back together, I thought it would be cool to leave the bottom cover off. About 300 miles later as I was driving along the car quit. Long story short, the A/C belt came off and wrapped around the crank pulley. ARGHHHHH !!!

Will

so as you can see by the previous posts you dont "need" it, but it is better to be safe and keep it on.

i used regular paint. not that high temp crap. that stuff sucks. its to sensitive to oil and dirt. it was automotive finish paint. i put white under it also.
