SAturday morning im installin my 14b and im just curious on what precautions i should take before i start the car? any ideas would be good :)

Give every line and screw a good once over, Check and add oil if needed, add coolant, make sure all tools are out of the bay.

You should prime your turbo with oil before you start the car as a precaution - better safe than sorry.

Unplug your coilpack, MPI fuse and crank the car for a good 10 seconds to get oil in the turbo. Connect the coilpack, MPI and start her right up.

All the others who responded that you don't have to prime the turbo must like the risk of blowing a turbo.

The easy way to prime a turbo is to pour about half a capful of oil in the oil feed hole before you install the oil feed line. Spin the compressor by hand to make sure the oil is spread around and everything turns smoothly. A 14b only needs a little oil, just enough to coat the bearings.

If this turbo came off another car without being dissassembled, it should still have some oil in the bearings and still spin smoothly anyway.

How would you blow a turbo that isn't spooling???. Almost as soon as you start it oil is fed to it. As long as you let it idle you are fine. It won't hurt to prelube but it's definately not a risk.(unless you start it up and immediately WOT.)

Just because the turbo isnt "spooling" does not mean it is not spinning. It is neccesary on a brand new turbo to get some lubrication to the bearings. you said it yourself. "Almost as soon as you start it oil is fed to it." It's that "Almost" that will harm your turbo.

the MPI relay trick will work fine, but if it is a used 14b, it will still have oil in it, and some on the bearings. I just took apart a 63t than sat in the yard, with water in it for 1 1/2 years, and it still had oil on the main and rod bearings!

I agree with 2LV8Eater, pulling the MPI and cranking will throw some oil down the feed lines and give you some peace of mind. It can't hurt, and the turbo will be spinning at idle.

It's broken.....LOL

If the exhaust pulses are flowing through the manifold, they're moving through the turbine housing, which usually means the turbo is spinning, unless, of course, your bearings are stiffer than hell!

Just because exaust is flowing, does not mean the turbine and shaft is spinning. If I slapped a t-100 with a 1.03ar exaust housing on my stocker talon, it wont spin at idle. An example is a single turbo 88 Vette I saw a video of, at idle his turbo was revolving at MAYBE 20rpm.
Im not saying I care really, or have a t-100, just giving an example

Well, either way, it's probably a good idea to pre-lube the turbo, and it can't hurt!:thumb:
