I'm Just wondering if this would be a good idea, since the 420a is very similar to the 4G63 in design? Has anyone tried this? What are the advantages?

Also on a side-note I have a 6-bolt with 193k on it which is in my '90 Laser RS right now. Is the bottom end swap from a 6-bolt simpler than just replacing the 7 with the 6? Engine has 193k on it, runs great aside from burning some oil and needing a turbo rebuild. I haven't had to do any major taking-apart but I'm fully confident with planning, downtime and the right tools it can be done. I know I can same a lot of $ doing it myself, and another engine would cost a lot; I see it wise to pull this one out and save the ca$h for more parts. Any chance someone can show me the cheapest upgrade path for a 2g to get it into the 12s?:dsm:

The cheapest path for a 2G. Look up to the parts guide and tuning guides.

I'm still a newb to cars; I heard of someone doing this. Maybe it was from a 4G64? It could supposedly have better flow (not sure). 1g rods and 2g pistons are good 400 hp and under right? What does a fully-built engine consist of (how much stuff can you do to it, such as porting, hone-extruding, knife crank, etc.)? I can't wait to get my 2g in a few weeks...it's going to be a 95 so I have to be mindful of the "C" word as some call it ;)

1) As said before, the 420A and 4G63 have nothing but displacement in common.
2) Your questions are all over the place. You ask if you can bolt a 420A on a 4G63 when you have a 90 and then you ask the cheapest upgrade path for a 2G. Can you straighten out your thoughts a little. Its hard to follow.
3) You can swap in a 7-bolt 1G block into your 90 with no issues. Just make sure you get the right flywheel and have the correct oil cooler setup.

Sorry about that...I'll try to organize my thoughts a little better here.

1. the 420a head swap was something I heard from someone. So they're nowhere near the same engine, I can forget about it.

2. I'm getting a 2g in about 3 weeks or so, and it's a 95 so I'm considering upgrades for it. Which mods can I do first that will give me the most HP per little money?

3. I'm aware of the issues with the early 2gs (95s-97s) having issues with crankwalk, so I am thinking about what it will take to use the small block from my Laser and swap it with the 7-bolt on the 2g.

Thanks for the help, you guys know a whole lot about DSMs. "DSMs - Making Mechanics Out Of Normal People Since 1989." HAHA

Much much better. :thumb:

Yup, you got it now.

Ahhh. Now it makes sense. Open up the intake, exhaust, boost gauge and boost controller. There are a bunch of 'free mods' you can do as well. Look up the tuning guides and most vendors have an 'upgrade path' that is more or less correct, depending on your point of view.

No matter step 0 always is make sure the car is running perfectly. New plugs, no leaks, new wires, new filters, etc. Regular maintenance stuff.

Thanks a bunch Sean, I'll probably need frequent-poster miles for as many questions I'm going to ask! Do you have any pics of your ride btw?

But of course it's a turbo! I wouldn't have it any other way. The dealer says they can find me whatever I want. I told him '95 GSX fully loaded, reasonable miles. I'm partial to black, but I'll take whatever color...

Don't forget about a CBV or BOV. As the stock 2g bleeds the much needed boost away :)

Speaking of crankwalk..... we had a car come into our shop complaining of clutch problems

After a while we lifted it in the air... crank had a quarter-inch of free play in it.... that's not good.

First car in over a year that the shop has been opened, that we've seen with crankwalk.

What parts can I salvage from my 1g that will work good on the 2g? Since I have the whole car I might as well see which other parts I can take (might keep the 1g bov for a while until I can order an HKS SS). I think I'm going to get a 97-99 bumper to replace the 95 one. It has much more style. This is going to be a bench/shop winter project. I will probably have the block reconditioned among other things. What should I have done to my 6-bolt small block for it to be a solid foundation for 400-450 HP? I'm aiming for mid 11's to low 12's. Nice talking to you guys, btw. :)
