T28 on a 1G - is it possible?

From the subject, most of you can probably guess what my question is going to be - how difficult would it be to mount a T28 (or similar) turbo to a 1G?

I know it's not a large turbo - but I'm not looking for massive horsepower. I'm not looking to pull 11s at the strip. I'm simply looking to make the best autocrossing 1G that I can - on a budget.

Of course, an AGP L1R/SS44 or something similar would be awesome - but ultimately unfeasible for me now. I figure my existing mods & a 2G/Evo exhaust manifold will give me a nice starting point, but where from here?

The T28 makes good power, spools like mad, and is relatively cheap to buy - but what kind of modifications would I have to perform to make it work?

All insightful feedback is appreciated. :)

A big/evo iii 16G will make then same power and will bolt-up perfrectly. I guess my question is, why do you want to use that turbo?

A Evo/16G turbo will make good power, sure. The reason I want to use a T28 or something is because I want a boost threshold as low as possible (below 2500rpm), and from everything I've read, a T28 can accomodate that - and has been called the best turbo for autocrossing. That's precisely what I want to use it for.

I installed a t-25 on a 1G last year, it was an emergency repair, and I had to treat it as if it was a 16G going on a 2G.

1. The oil feed and return lines are different, and the coolant lines are different. You can use the stock 2G lines and upgrade to a SS oil feed line, that would just leave the intercooler piping to address. Some of the lines might need to be bent slightly, namely the oil return line (it's a pain in the a**).
2. The lower intercooler pipe is obviously different and I used scrap piping to finish the job, but you can use the stock 2G lower pipe.
3. The rest of the install is straight forward to swap, meaning everything mounts in the same location and the parts are interchangable without modification.

I hope this info was helpful, but I do have to agree with the question posed by L2RTSiAWD, why not just go with the big 16G? Is it spool-up time of the t-28? Cost? Let us know your thoughts and what are your future plans for the rest of the turbo setup.

Thanks for the comments so far. It's the spool up time, really, that I'm looking for.

I'd be using the stock SMIC - but I have stainless oil lines going to my 14b (leftovers from the former owners FP Green install). My current 14b is ported, and I'm getting a Dejon intake pipe later this week. I'm also planning a GM MAF/Translator install later during the summer, in draw-through configuration.

In reality, a 16g spools up fast enough that you really shouldn't waste your time and money putting a smaller more expensive turbo on your 1g.

What about keeping your 14B? This site actually recommends it as an inexpensive way to go for use as a turbo upgrade for a 2G running in street mod:

Then you could run in a stock class, STX, or ESP. All much less expensive classes to run in if you want to be competitive. A T28 or 16G are going to put you into street mod. Actually just a boost controller will put you into street mod.

I have nothing against that really - I'm just checking out my options.

Heh, already been doing SM for a year now. The guy who rules it drives a 3KGT with a Boost controller

It usually ends up being pretty competitive - since you end up with guys who think their super modded cars should get them through the course ultra fast- but then SM ends up being slower than so many other classes simply because of the driver skill factor. Nonetheless, you're always competing with the guys who can really drive - as is true in any class. Honestly, I'd probably prefer to be in ESP or DS - but then I'd never get to have any fun with the car on the street. :D

Awesome! Good to see another Hokie around! :thumb:
