where i live you don't see too many performance imports, most of them are just rice or brown rice (domestic or an import that should not be riced).

Does anyone know of any shops in the KCMO area that do head work. all the shops i have checked out mostly do Interior/Exterior non performance mods.

I am looking to get my head ported, all new valves & springs, and some new cams.

any help?

Bad news> I don't know of any in Kansas City. Sorry.

Good News> Great time learn how to port it yourself! The tools are cheap and easy to come by, and it will save you a shedload of money. Honestly, a gasket matching and general port job is not tough. If, however, you wish to go whole hog on it and go with a race port job, your best bet is to sell the head and use the cash towards a professionally ported and built head by a quality shop with a flowbench. There are quite a few shops on the net that cater towards that kind of thing, but be ready to drop 2K plus on it.
I chose to go the former route. Here's what I dropped on the job:
Electric Die Grinder from Harbor Freight: ~30 bucks
Fan Motor Speed Control from Home Depot: ~12 bucks
Porting kit from Standard Abrasives: ~40 bucks
New Crower Titanium Retainers from DSMTrader: 70 bucks
New Crower Springs from DSMTrader: 160 bucks
New Web Cams Street Grind from ThePartsTrader: 350 bucks
Used head: 150 bucks
Hydroclean head: 30 bucks
Valve job and diamond resurface head: 165 bucks

All in all I spent about 1K on the head. About 430 of that is in a used head, porting tools, and valve job. The rest is performance stuff. Extreme offers a CNC milled head with ss valves and springs but no cams for 2823.00 cams put you over 3200. As far as shops go, you often get what you pay for. Good work ain't cheap.

Just food for thought.

well since i bought the car for $500 and plan to put abour 3-4k into it, I mite just fallow your route

Visit the Standard Abrasives site for a good overview of how to port a head. Nice tutorial touting their products, but showing the things you want to accomplish. Let me know how it goes!

LOL.

Porting your own head, latest trick on the UBB's on how to go slower and think you went faster. Sorta like selling that 16g and going to a MUTT.

You don't take your head to a rice/import shop anyways. You take it to a domestic (read big motor, high hp shop) shop that has been in the business for quite some time. Even then I would only trust them for MILD work.

People have went 10.0 on stock heads. This isn't to say porting doesn't help, BUT I don't think I've seen one bit of dyno evidence that supports it either. Needless to say I went with a fully worked BJ's head that cost more than my short block  !

I'm very happy that you chose to have your work done professionally. BJ's is said to do great work. What we are talking about here is mild street port work. Gasket matching and smoothing out the casting marks. Not race porting. Not acid porting. The kind of thing you can, reasonably, accomplish at home without a flow bench. That's all. BTW, who ever said anything about an Import shop?

even if i don't do any porting, i am going to get new valves, springs, and cams, i just don't trust the ones that are currently in it
