I know how they work in detail but it doesnt help. What do you guys use
blow off valve and if so does it recurculate boost or is it an atmospheric dump.Or do you use a bypass?I was at the local strip and saw 3 dsm's I didnt hear one blowoff?bypass must be better for times.....every one calls the stock a bov but under my hood it says bypass (in the vacum diagram) ? Is it a bypass because it blows off in to the intake and not the atmoshpere?I hear bovs that dump into the atmosphere make your car run like gabage!Because the metered air is off to the fuel.
any insite would be help full in my purchase!!

Tom

From my understanding we actually us a CBV - Compressor Bypass Valve. I don't know the diff b/n CBV, bov, pop-off, etc. Or if there is any difference.

You're right about the un-metered air when venting to the atmosphere, this causes a problem on OUR cars because of the MAF. Cars with map sensors (and maybe other types) including our cars with a VPC (it uses a map) can vent to the atmosphere all day long. (PLEASE correct if I'm wrong).

Blake

ps. As far as which to buy... well if I ever end up with a VPC I'll upgrade to something obnoxious like a a TurboXS RFL, until then it's stock for me =)

I have a RFL right now. Just like it's name suggests it is LOUD!!! and vents and I love it.

Circulation Bypass Valve (CBV) is a term from Trucking industry but it is common in DSM's. This is the official Mitsu designation. CBV's in the trucking industry allow air to enter the intake mani by bypassing the the turbo to let the turbo spool and without losing low end grunt.

The CBV as used in our cars works differently. It is vaccum actuated to relieve the compressor wave recoiling from the closed throttle plate.

A true BOV (Blow-Off Valve) or POV (Pop-Off Valve) is boost actuated and is used as a boost limiting device. We have a wastegate to do that at the turbo.

a bypass and compressor bypass are different arnt they?My friends got a jetta 1.8t he has a bosch bypass (stock) when hes at 5-6000rpm and smacks the throttle shut it lets out a quite swoosh you can only hear it in the car with windows up.His dump/bypass tube seams larger then mine.On my gsx the dump tube is tiny.Dont quote me on this though I have not looked at both at the same time but if his bypass valve dumps in to a tube 1/4 inch and I dump in to a 1/8 inch tube is that what makes it a compressor bypass? ((((( THAT WAS IN THEROY )))))))

ALL I know is when I got my car my dump tube was hanging from my intake and blowing off in to the atmosphere and it had less power and ran like poooooopppie to say the least. But that was due to the vacum leak.
I most likley made no sence and mispelled every other word so if you have any replies feel free.
THANKS
Tom

It does. As well as Circulation Bypass Valve. CBV as in Compressor is what we have. CBV the original from truck land is Circulation. Sorry on the confusion.

to make it simple...DSM-BOV....if you dont have it, air will SLAM back into the turbo causing LOTS of nice damage...ive seen a T25 with pressure cracks from ONE RUN w/ a bad BOV...
if you go to a junk yard to buy one of those nastalgic 1G bov's tell them you need a simple "bypass valve"....

I Think we all under stand why we have bov or cbv's.

HEY MUTTEDTSI,
Did you notice a gain of any kind from the RFL?

Is every one else here running stock? If not what do you run CBV or BOV and if its a BOV does it dump in to the atmosphere? And did you fell a gain.I know the stock bov is weak as all hell, but If I get one I might have to get two and compare......try out the bov and the cbv......that would be nice!!!
Tom

Didnt mean to be an azs hole but it sounded like you where taking a personal shot at me!
Im sure the underinformed newbes now have that much more knowledge under there little dsm belts!
your boy,

Well since I have a 2g any new BOV will hold boost better than the POS stock plastic one. But I swtiched from a greddy type-s to the RFL. No gains except in the area of BOV volume :D (It's not called the RFL for nothing) ;)
