Ok my plan this summer is to keep things cool. Heres what it involves: redline water wetter and prestone coolant with 180 thermostat, and heat resistant wrap for my intake and intercooler pipes along with a aluminum block off for the filter. The wrap is supposed to block out 98% or more outside temps, and with the block off for the filter I believe the stock intercooler will be able to push 14psi on my ported and clipped big16g. The water wetter is supposed to cool the coolant up to 30 degrees and prestone has always treated me right. I know wrapping may seem over board but if your ever opened your hood on a winter day(let alone a summer day!!) its freakin hot, so I think the extra cooling for the pipes will help the intercooler not heat soak. The coolant is a must have and overlooked it when I purchased my car.

Anyways what do you guys think? Oh and where can I get a 180 thermostat?
Andrew

Also try more powerful fans, fluidyne radiator, jethot 2000 coating on your o2 housing, turbo exh housing, exh manifold. Phenolic spacer between head and intake manifold.

Any autoparts store should have it in stock. I run a 160 degree thermo and my temps sit right at 193. With a 180, I was over 220 most of the time (I also tried a 170 and it just got me to 210 or so).

I bought these at O'Reilly's Auto Parts.

isnt 160 a little cool? anyways The fluiddyne is coming but not this year mostlikely. I believe what I mentioned along with whatever else I can afford would be enough for my mods/area of living. Thanks for the replies

My temps sit right at 193 all the time (verified with Pocketlogger) and some of my mysteriously low timing was fixed.

Doesn't seem too low to me.

Chris, you may want to consider a better radiator, better fans, and/or better coolant. 193 degrees with a 160 degree thermostat means the system isn't working very well.

I'm sure your FMIC doesn't help.

Well, my secondary fan is about 1/4 of the way gone due to a lack of a heat shield to keep it from deteriorating from the heat, but it is hardly ever on, so I dunno. Coolant is fairly fresh, but the radiator could proabably use a cleaning.

I have some other stuff that needs to be taken care of first.

1. Upper bushing on the back right knuckle destroyed itself

2. 14b is starting to squeal

3. Timing belt needs to be done

4. Still owe school $1000 or so for the semester

A $15 or so thermostat is good enough for me now. Eventually I would like to get some slimlines in there because one of my IC pipes is rubbing on a fan guard, but I just don't have the time/money right now.

Ok I decided Im going to get a 160 or 170...either way they are 10 beans a pop should I get the 160 or 170 with a good working stock cooling system?
Andrew

Why not try the 170 if needed and if you are still hot, step it down again. It only takes like 10 mins to change.

Y eah I did mine a while ago but it currently has a 190 in it. so I figure 170 and water wetter will do ok...even though Im doing good now I d just like to cool things down. Also does anyone know of a reputable heat wrap to keep my pipe cool? I was looking at header wrap and might just go with that.
Andrew

Stay with the stock 190° thermostat. The whole system wants it.

I'd not wrap the intercooler piping, it'll just hold heat in, making it that much more difficult to rid it of soak once it's happened.

More than 30% antifreeze/coolant cuts into water's cooling capability, which is much better than antifreeze's.
