I am not sure where this goes, so move it if need be. Some guy at work told me that people put oil in their radiatiors instead of water/anitfreeze because it absorbs heat quicker. Has anyone heard of this?

You just drain your radiator and put in oil. Sounds like it would do good. It would keep your car cool on test and tune nights at the track when you run every ten minutes. I don't know though. Just wanting to see if anyone has done this or heard of it.

Ya then it goes into the engine where water is suppossed to go into. OMG

Yeah I know. Thats what didn't make sense to me. I don't really understand how this would help. I think this guy is full of s&%t

Wow...... brain cells dieing.... dieing.... dieing.....

Yes, your friend is full of $hit -- do me a favor, go kick him.

Actually, before you kick him between the legs ask him if you'd have to put an oil pump where your water pump goes :) I wanna see what he comes up with.

I wasn't planning on doing this, just wondering if anyone has ever heard of it

Do any of you know anything about heat absorbtion rates of various liquids? Oil has nowhere fu@king near what water does. Off the top of my head I would like to say it absorbs 5 or 6 times as many BTUs per given unit.

But I urge you to try it anyway. Report back.

Does he drive a diesel?...I have a couple of friends with power strokes and the manual tells you to put about 3-4 quarts of oil in the radiator every once in a while. For whatever reason I don't know but this in no way would relate to your car so don't do it.

Ok guys. You are talking to me like I am a dumbass! I am not even the one that said to do this. A guy at work told me this and I just wondered if you guys had heard anything like this because I thought it was some major b.s.

No, he is talking about just a regular car

Well then your initial instincts were correct. Your coworker is a dumbass. If nothing else, I hoped you have learned not to second guess your dumbass detector.

The only reason that I could see anyone saying this is the fact that supercomputers and mainframes used to be cooled with mineral oil. The cooling properties of mineral oil are nowhere near that of regular, plain old water. The reason that we used to use it is because it had no conductive properties, so if you sprung a leak, your multi-million dollar toy would not be shot. Putting this $hit in a car would have no benefit whatsoever. If he wants to try it, have him take pics of his snapped belts and toasty oil pump. The increased viscosity of oil. as opposed to water, should be enough to at least burn something out.

Later,
Matt.
