Heres my problem. I have a 97 Auto GST with a fresh 6bolt in it. The car runs and drives perfect, but grinds horribly on start up. I bought the car with everything already done so Im not sure on how the work was done or what parts were used.(got the car cheap) I have gotten the starter rebuilt to a 97 gst auto specs so I have ruled that out as the problem. The car has the Kiggs kit on it from what I can see(shim plate from motor to trans. The flexplate I have had off and it is a 6bolt plate with 4 ears to it that bolt to the torque converter which has 4 holes. It is the stock 2g tranny, I believe, so Im thinking maybe I have the wrong converter that is causing the grind. What you everyones thoughts?

I was told to possibly shim the converter. Is this a reasonable fix?

You should not have to shim the torque converter.. ever with these cars. So the sound is only when the starter is turning the engine?

Yes, the grind is only when you try to crank the car over and its horrible. Then Ill turn the key off then crank it again, with a little more grinding noise then it will "catch" and fire up and once running it runs/drives perfect......weird. Any thoughts

I have gotten under the car and spun the converter and looked at the teeth and they seem fine, no usual damage and the starter seems fine as well. I have tried to shim the starter in/out.......everything. I cant figure this out.

Im new to tranny work and auto's especially but isnt there a starter plate that in a sense shims the starter and keeps it from tweaking out of place? I think that might be my problem, Im not seeing one, previous owner tried to rig another shim on the tranny to replace it but isnt working, hopefully.

You just found your problem, if the starter is not Perfectly lined up it will make all kinds of sounds.

I just took my car to a local tranny shop and they looked at it and noticed that there was no starter plate so they are trying to fabricate one for me.

You should be able to buy a starter plate fairly cheap, i wouldn't try and make one just for the fact that an OEM can be had so cheap and there's no chance of it being wrong once you have the OEM one in.

You can get the plate at most junkyards for 10 bucks or so. I worked at a junkyard that was part of the "LKQ network" of yards and that was our nationwide average and what we sold them for to stay competitive. We always just took them off because we seperated the tranny, flywheel and engine all into seperate pieces, so they were tough to find the riht one, but sold cheap.

Dont try to fabricate one, Buy one OEM wether it is used or new from the dealer just buy the correct one.

Thanks guys, I will contact the nearest dealership and get the right one.
